Default Craigslist Robberies

I'm writing a book about a traveling merchant of types, who obtains all his wares through nefarious deeds. The thought struck me that people sell some god damn expensive things on Craigslist (Jewelry anywhere from $5-15,000) and of course many other things. Now I figure to be as accurate as possible, the character will use a prepaid phone with 0 links to him, and arrive at the meet in a stolen car. The character may or may not have a concealed firearm, but would try to just ask the seller to view the item before cash is revealed, snagging it (from likely a woman, seeing as it's jewelry) and dipping out, ditching the car, and sitting on any stolen items for months at a time.

Plot holes, thoughts, is this stupid or can it actually work.

Most, if not all meetups for expensive items will be in public places.

Is there any validity to this, does anyone have any experience in dealing with expensive items on Craigslist

how much is the rolex again? ok ill bring the cash! how about we meet in the alley way next to chings pizza on 10th?! thats the best place so you avoid getting robbed, trust me!

now in reality a public place is not that bad, timmy hoes? there wont be too many people willing to be a hero there, just lure them out to your car before the exchange and take off running.

also, most people selling jewelery are women but will almost always be with a male of some sort for protection. and they WILL protect the woman.

Dont scam people weaker than you, that's for the people that aren't smart enough to scam people who are less intelligent. Armed robbery or theft by deception? your call...

This is bad ideas, leave your morals at the door. A piece of jewelry worth several thousand dollars is several thousand dollars.

Have sold hundreds of items on Craigslist over the last several years. Most people are just fine meeting in parking lots of public places. I have had some folks, women mostly, insist on meeting inside places like Starbucks and McDonalds.

So then it'd be safe to assume, this IS plausible. And if the meet place was too hot when you arrived, you could always just bail. A parking lot would be easy to just snag it and leave. Alternatively, fake bills could always be used, however I'm not sure how to produce legit looking ones so I'll stay away from that, even though probably the most shitty $100's would fool some dumb suburban bitch.

Completely plausible and doable. Meet in real busy parking lots like Targets..Walmarts...REI stores etc. Have them tell you the color and make of vehicle they will be driving. Park far from them. Walk up to their vehicle. Do the deed. Disappear back into the parking lot and drive away.

Jewelry you are looking at 10-30% of its retail price generally.

.... which is likely the price you're buying it for, if it's off Craigslist. And no, it's more 30-70% jewelry doesn't depreciate as much as many other items.
