if you add flour and a lil baking powder to some mashed potatoes you can turn it into pizza crust. rice and beans are cheap and will fill you up, same with lentils.

Good old ham and cheese sandwiches. Throw the ham and cheese in the bread, then nuke it in the microwave. Quick easy and warm, mix and match different varieties so you don't get tired.

Pasta in particular, but take it easy, you don't want all those carbs. Really it's about where you shop; at Dominick's where I work polenta is $4.79, at Trader Joe's the same amount costs at most $1.99. At Jewel tofu costs about $2.49, while at my Dominick's we have a deal that lets you get ten for $10. Make sure to shop for the deals, try out different stores.

You might find it beneficial to join a co-op too, they provide fresh, locally grown produce weekly or biweekly, for an annual or bi-annual fee, and usually it's a pretty affordable one at that.

Homemade pasta made from egg and flour. Knead the dough and then roll it flat. Cut into into strips or use a pasta maker if your fancy. I don't think anything is cheaper than this besides hunting, fishing or gardening for your food. This might take some time to initially prep, but if you do it right you can eat for a week straight. My favorite sauce for this pasta is simply olive oil and garlic sauteed in the frying pan.

Potatoes for the win. Bags of frozen hashbrowns are also quite cost effective and easy peasy. I like stirring seasoned salt and pepper in em on the pan at med heat myself.

Pork chops are a fairly cheap meat. I've always just panfried em and put them in an egg sandwhich for a quick, greasy and filling meal.

Peeled potatoes and white rice are the main things that are cheap and not destructive to your health.

Potatoes have toxins just under the skin, solanine and chaconine, it makes sense that they would evolve a defense against insects.

I'm fond of throwing a couple cut up strips of bacon in a bowl, throwing a pack of .84 cent Great Value brocolli cheddar rice in, and a touch of milk and butter, and the recommended amount of water for the rice. It's pretty good.

I wholeheartedly disagree, your take on this is a dramatic generalization and oversimplification. The 'toxin' you speak of is Phytic_acid, and while it can impair absorption of zinc and magnesium, it's hardly toxic. It actually has anti-oxidant effects. Brown rice also contains way more iron and b vitamins than white rice.

If you're in a developing nation, than yes, brown rice every day might be a poor choice. But it's delicious, cheap, easy to make, and VERY healthful. If you eat it every day, and in large amounts, simply start supplementing with zinc & magnesium.

Actually, I bet if you took some dirt cheap magnesium oxide with your brown rice, ($5 for a 300 count) all the phytic acid would chelate with the magnesium immediately surrounding it, and effectively be inactivated.

ALSO, did you look at that wiki article? There's fucking phytic acid in practically everything...

What's the point? Why not just eat white rice and take a supplement?

There have been case studies of populations that have eaten "healthy" whole grains and guess what? They end up with nutrient deficiencies, worse nutrient levels than people who it processed grains. When I was poor as fuck I used to make bread tacos. Basically a taco but made with bread.

There was also bread nachos, bean and bread sammies with spam, ect.

The cheapest though would be a rice gruel... Extremely healthy but you'll eventually want to shoot yourself in the face with a brick... From a cannon... Strapped to a pissed off grisly bear that shoots bees when he growls and has laser eyes and adamantium claws with a case of the mondays and new york rush hour traffic under his belt which would be black from all the Chuck Noris kung foo he knows.

Basically you make a big batch of sticky rice and stir in raw veggies and broth and it'll keep for a few weeks. Ever so often if you can afford or trap and kill some meat you'd cook it dice it up and add it in as well.

Interesting point, but generally anti-oxidants refers to those molecules which react with free oxygen ions, not with molecular oxygen (o2) but with atomic oxygen (o). These are the most common free radicals in the body. Free radicals are very reactive, and will happily bond with and fuck up DNA and RNA in the body. Antioxidants just provide something for them to latch on to and react with. Vitamin C is the cheapest antioxidant afaik btw.

Wait a minute, since the phytic acid is already bound to minerals it wouldn't even be able to react with oxygen ions. This just makes the defense of it due to it being an antioxidant even more idiotic. I should have made this connection sooner.

Porridge (oatmeal) + whole milk = a good balance of complex carbs and fats (and a not-inconsiderable amount of protein, too), and with a decent amount of vitamins and minerals.

Pasta fills me up for about half an hour, then I feel hungry again. Even if I eat and eat and eat pasta until it feels like I'm about to vom, within thirty minutes I can eat pasta again. Plus it's nutritionally pretty empty.

That's a good sign that you've fucked up your body. I only eat two meals a day and don't feel hungry in between them. I don't even feel hungry in the mornings, I could easily go the first half of the waking day without food.

It's not that carbs are bad, I think the low carb recommendation is based on bad science, it's that the typical sources of carbs are bad. Grains and sugar. A variety of negative effects, a variety of negative compounds, one which may contribute to leptin resistance being lectin:

Take anything that you could think about eating, then add a side of potatoes or white/brown rice.

You can get massive sacks of rice for fairly cheap, and it is a pretty good accompaniment. Likewise for potatoes (especially Russets, but red potatoes are also pretty cheap).

Rice is better than potatoes as a source of carbs IMO. Too bad potatoes are waaaay better tasting.

Buy cheap cuts of meat. Pig cheeks, ox cheeks, ox tail, livers, etc. You can make huge batches of very tasty casseroles, chillis, meat sauces. You can freeze portions, and you're still getting good, quality nutrition.
