Improving My Memory
Memory seems to be a point of downfall for me.
Oftentimes someone will mention something that happened 6 months to a year ago, that I was directly involved in, and I won't even recall it remotely. Movies I've seen less than 5 years ago, I can't remember even the basic plot line sometimes, while others seem to be able to quote movies they've seen years ago on a whim, and still people get the references immediately as well, yet I can't at all for some reason.
I can hardly remember what any of my teachers looked like before 5th grade or so, nonetheless anything that happened, but I hear people telling stories about kindergarten and that far back all the time. Hell, I don't even know who my 6th grade teacher was... for the last 5 minutes I've been trying to think of a face or a name - it's purely a blank.
I'm in general at least a somewhat bright person, so it's not that I'm just a fucking idiot and that's it... I just seem to have this sort of disadvantage - a disadvantage I'd like to try and overcome.
I want to be able to remember minuscule things. I want to remember things like who sat behind me in Chemistry class 2 years ago. I want to remember movies when I see them the first time, even if it's been a while. I want to remember funny things that happened a year or two ago. I want to remember what I do every day in my free time.
I don't want my life to be essentially lost to myself as I see it being if I can't remember it.
If anyone has a similar problem, or any suggestions as to how it would be feasible to boost memory skills, I would highly appreciate it. I've looked around a little, but can't seem to find any advice beyond trivial things such as "pay attention to things!", which is practically a worthless suggestion.
PS: I've been meaning to make this thread for a week now. Guess what happened.

Re: Improving My Memory
There was a txt on totse on how to develop photographic memory, though some of us are born with it (yay me!). I don't know if there's any drugs to help you but the first thing would be to find out what your memory type is, ie auditory, visual, kinetic.

I'll have to look for that, then. Do you think it's here on Zoklet still?
How would I figure out what my memory type is? Just thinking about it, all of them would make sense to me, but I'm sure there's a dominant one if most people have one - but how to find out which?

Re: Improving My Memory
Someone please post something in this thread. I have a horrible memory, and nothing I try seems to work. Has anyone "cured" their memory?

My memory is so bad my guitarist gave me some sheet music in a folder and wrote on the folder in huge letters "FUCK YOU I BET 5 DOLLARS YOU WILL LOSE THIS".
I totally owe him 5.
Its so bad (and this isn't a joke) I bought a bottle of Gingko Biloba and I kept forgetting to take it so I put it somewhere I thought was obvious, guess it wasn't that obvious cause I don't remember where I put it...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ginkgo_biloba
despite what wikipedia says, Ginkgo and other nootropics really help, you can actually notice the effects. I don't know if you have booster juice (the store) in your area's but they are full of memory improving herbals, etc

I put my vitamins where it should be obvious that I should see them, but I keep forgetting to take them. Then again, half of myself doesn't want me to take them just to prove something more severe. I am so petty.

Re: Improving My Memory
So it looks like we've got this nice little club going amongst us.
Too bad we'll all forget to attend any meetings if we planned 'em anyway.
I'll look into those herbs, cliche. I'd really not like to become dependent on chemicals to boost my memory, but it might be worth a shot.

Or not. I went into a GNC and asked the store clerk if they had any nootropics and she just stared at me... I looked around and surprisingly I didn't find any. Albeit, I wasn't looking very hard since I was the only customer in the store and she was staring at me. >.> I had to get out of that situation so I skimmed each section and none of them seemed to have anything nootropic related.
Also, have any good online sources for Ginkgo Biloba? All the places I'm finding either seem overpriced or hokey.

You should be able to find it at your local CVS or Walgreens....easy to steal, too.

Re: Improving My Memory
I have the same sort of problem, tried Ginkgo..seemed to work a little bit, at least, enough to be worth getting it.
^^^And poster above me^^^ . Your statement might seem simple, and blunt at first, but if you think about it...it makes alot of sense. If your going through school to become rich, and wonder why you cant recall your history notes even though you really want to do well in school, you cant remember because you dont care about the notes, and didnt find the info interesting. Even though you tried hard, you really care about the effects of education, not the education itself.
Thats just an example, and not a conclusion, but a thought.

Re: Improving My Memory
5 tips to success with memory!
1. Lay off the pot (a test if you need to is if you realize it's difficult to lucidly describe things without pausing to think about what you're saying)
2. Get enough sleep and wake up at the same time every morning
3. Eat regularly
4. Exercise
5. 1 cup of coffee/day no more
k thx

I don't smoke weed.
I eat and exercise regularly, and drink only one cup of coffee a day if I even have any.
Sleep could be a problem, though. I'll have to work on that.
I'll also look into that book.

Re: Improving My Memory
Do what I do and injure yourself (minorly) whenever you want to commit something to long term memory. Eg. Bite your hand when trying to remember an equation. Scarring also helps for stuff you really need to remember.

Re: Improving My Memory
Well if you write out your dreams in the morning and read through them every once in a while (or even better, every day), you'll start remembering your dreams. Maybe that would be a step towards increasing your memory of things that happen when you're conscious... That's just a guess though.

I've tried this twice in the past.
Both times I've gone a few days doing it, and guess what happens? I forget.
Tomorrow morning my dream shall be written.

You don't have any interest in the information itself. Wanting to remember who you sat next to in chemistry class 3 years later doesn't make it interest you.
Crackpot Psychologist explained it already
You want to remember useless information for the hell of it? Get a notebook.

You don't understand what he's talking about. I can relate. I'll forget things that I need to remember, things that I want to remember. Where did I put my shoes? Did John say meed him at three or four? Have I eaten today? It's not that I don't care, it's that I can't remember.
Oh, and I've been taking that Ginkgo Biloba stuff for the past week or so and it's actually helping, but that might just be placebo. I dont have those moments where I can't remember something as often.

Re: Improving My Memory
To remember things, when I hear it, I repeat it a couple of times in my head. Then I think about a different aspect of it. With the repetition and different views of it, I can remember most things that I need to.
Also, as stupid as it sounds, if you can memorize using rhymes, it can be a great aid.
