Default Autism Self Test

http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/9.12/aqtest.html

Quote:
In the first major trial using the test, the average score in the control group was 16.4. Eighty percent of those diagnosed with autism or a related disorder scored 32 or higher.
I got 27. Hah! Aspergers accusing bastards.

I got 11, but some of the questions were really stupid I think. Like, "I find it difficult to imagine what it would be like to be someone else." I'll nitpick about that one (which seems like a fairly autistic thing to do, incidentally). Sure, it's asking about your sense of empathy and comprehension of others' emotional states, but can anyone really understand what it's like to be anyone but themselves? That one in particular, and some others, appear to have been poorly thought out before the test was made.

even if the questions sound weird, they're included because of good psychometric data, true positives and rate of response and what now. it's all about interpreting how the whole typically responds to questions, they'll usually not think too hard about the individual questions, or if they do, it doesn't effect their response as much as you suspect.

That one in particular irked me for a fairly trivial reason, but I think by and large you're right, the data you've posted indicated that autistic people will score highly. Was it specified what age demographic this covers or is it a 'one size fits all' kind of deal?

quick search of "age" in article:

Their mean age was 31.6 yrs (sd = 11.8, range 16.5-58.3).

37.0 yrs (sd = 7.7, range 18.1-60.0).

21.0 yrs (sd = 2.9, range = 17.6-51.1). lol 10 SD

17.4 yrs (sd = 1.0, range = 15.3 - 18.7).

widespread.
