So, having played Deus Ex, Deus Ex: IW, System Shock 2 after being recommended them on here... any other older game gems I've missed?
What I'm looking for is a gripping plot above everything, with a good/decent gameplay. Pretty much any genre would do, but I'd prefer a first-person / third person action game. Preferably from the 1998-2004 era.
i recommend the game Return to Castle Wolfenstein (2001). Its a very underrated game because it was overshadowed by a lot of the other hyped games in its day. Its a WW2 shooter, but i can assure you, the plot is any but a typical WW2 game.
while youre at it, have a hand at soldier of fortune 2 (2002). the story on that is decent, but the gameplay isnt all just mindless shooting
Tell me you've not missed MGS1? Devil May Cry, The legacy Of Kain series, etc.
Played (and enjoyed) apart from the games listed in the OP, MGS1-2, SH1-4, Mafia I, RE1-3, Parasite Eve 1-2, Vampires: Countdown (wasn't that good), Syphon Filter 1-3, Warzone 2100, a few Tomb Raider games (which kinda sucked), IGI1-2 (meh), a few James Bond games (pretty lame), In Cold Blood (can't remember a thing from that game), Return To Castle Woflenstein. Probably a few more, but can't remember now.
Tried to play Soul Reaver - The Legacy of Kain, wasn't really my thing.
I'll have a look into Devil May Cry, last time I checked (which was probably around 5 years ago ) it was only out for PS2.
by the way, theres a 'best game ever' contest running on gamefaqs at the moment. a lot of the games there are prone to fanboy spamming (Halo, final fantasy, etc), and many of them are on consoles, but there are a few good ones generally liked by the whole community there. http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/con...9_bracket.html
edit: also, Star-wars: knights of the old republic is my favorite RPG. the story is fantastic, and there are multiple endings.

its a good game, but its fairly unknown by a lot of newer gamers. As a matter of fact, the game barely made it in the list at all, and only replaced some other shitty game in the last minute. it was up against MGS, a game with a famous legacy, and pokemon, one of the biggest fanboy driven series out there. yes the results are fail, but there are some good ones on the list
If you can manage it, I HIGHLY recommend the Legacy of Kain series: with MGS, it's my favorite series. The story is really amazing and the characters are some of the best developed I've ever seen.
A couple games on my list to play are Xenogears, Suikoden, and Chrono Trigger.
Also, if you haven't played Shadow of Colossus...do it.
while youre at it, have a hand at soldier of fortune 2 (2002).
This!

Fixed for accuracy. The 'sneaking' mission had you with a silenced pistol and an automatic shotgun.
The was a search light, dogs, you just couldn't sneak around for shit and you could not only blow people's legs off revealing chunks of flesh and bone but you could keep at it until they where just a puddle. The auto-shotgun was out within the first few seconds of the level!
The game is really fun and the online play is pretty decent.
I would highly recommend the Fallout series (save for Tactics, which sucked). Final Fantasy Tactics on the other hand was a great game (2nd best in the series if you ask me).
