Poland to Russia
I'm going to Russia in a couple months and I'm starting to work on the itinerary. So, I'll be living in Russia for a bit, but I wouldn't mind making a stop in Poland at the beginning of my trip.
It seems the best fares for flights to Europe are for London (2 years ago I got a $700 fare pretty easily), and then I'm pretty sure I can find good airfare for London to Poland. My question then is: What would be the best way to get to Russia from there? Taking a train through the Ukraine occurred to me (that way I could see a bit of that country too), but I'm going to deep into Russia, so I don't know if I'd like to spend like...48 hours on trains. What airlines could I look into? Does anyone know what type of fares I could expect? Any recommendations on trains would also be appreciated, as I've never taken them between countries before (well, except Eurostar).
If I take a direct flight to Moscow I think I can find fares as low as 1000, so ideally I'd want to match that.

Re: Poland to Russia
Are you going to live in Moscow or it just the flight lands there?

Re: Poland to Russia
take trains, unless your going to fucked up places like Ulan-Ude or Khabarovsk, discuss taxi price BEFORE getting in, rent a flat in advance, if your with pussy don't give them your house keys.

Re: Poland to Russia
If you take a train, it would probably be cheaper to leave from Slovakia than Poland

Haha, I'm going to Moscow and eventually Novosibirsk (at some point I want to check out Sochi too). I did research on train travel within Russia, and it sounds like it's just as safe as elsewhere in Europe. Could you explain booking procedures, where I could find timetables/rates, etc? If you have a website in Russian that's fine too.

I've lived there 2000-2003, don't know how it's now, but train booking was a pain in those days, try this http://www.poezda.net/en/web
safe, yes its safe, if your white that is. Novosibirsk - Sochi or Moscow - Novosibirsk men that's like almost 48 h on a train.
Novosibirsk, ok place, but not much to see really, great puss
Sochi, nice place, expensive, beaches are packed, stuck up puss

I stick out like a...black guy in Russia. This should be interesting. Oh, but speaking of which, where could I buy pepper spray? It's illegal to take that shit on planes, but I figure it could be good to have. Here I think you can get it at hardware stores, but I dunno where I should look in Russia.

Re: Poland to Russia
pepper spray is legal in Russia, i guess hunting gear stores should have it.
men if your black carry your passport at all times, if the police see that you're from a western country they'll leave you alone or maybe try to shake you for some cash, if you don't carry your passport you're in for a world of pain.

Make sure you have your passport with you at all times, and keep in mind that every time you arrive to a new place you have to register with the bloody authorities. Otherwise every cop will be stopping you and milking you for money.
And keep in mind, that it could kill at least half a day trying to get that registration. Queues and bullshit galore.
It should be *reasonably* safe for you, but keep in mind that the situation is getting more and more out of hand with the society there now. Don't expect the police or the bystanders to come help you, because chances are very high they won't.
Try to stay away from cheap bars and other places where boneheads hang out. You will recognize them when you see them - they look bulky, dressed in tracksuits, are loud/act as if they own the place, and have a beer in their hand. "Normal" people will not be a threat, but don't expect them to act friendly either.
Also, be aware that anti-american propaganda is very prevalent now in Russia, and most people buy into it.
It's a fucking shame that Russia is fucked up enough that I have to tell you all this - and you may get lucky and get a completely different impression when you get there, hopefully - but it's always better to be prepared for the worst.
Good luck with your trip.
Edit: Also, expect Sochi to be a lot less packed this year - with the Olympic games constructions happening there, a lot of people would probably be reluctant to go there this year.
