Question Root this LG Optimus LGL45C

I have this LG Optimus that is a prepaid phone from NET10, but it currently has no service on it and I don't plan to add service to it. The model number is LGL45C and I want to root it.

It has Android version 2.3.4 and the Kernal version is 2.6.35.7

I have the ADB and Eclipse set up on my PC and I can view the files from the command prompt/Eclipse. I ran a program on the phone from Eclipse(just some stupid program I made that had a button that didn't do anything).

I tried "adb reboot bootloader" at the cmd prompt, and it only restarted my device. I was given no "special menu".

I found on the XDA website, a rooted stock ROM. In the folder is an IMG file called "boot", a file called "installbusybox", and two folders, "META-INF" and "system".

From what I've been reading(a book), I need to flash this boot IMG to my phone, and BusyBox is a binary that'll give me a bunch on linux commands. This is where I'm confussed though...

How do I flash to to my phone?

You may actually still be rooted and not know it. Install SuperSu from the Play Store and run it. If you're not rooted it should let you know.

I'll check around more in a bit. Their was an alternative site and root method mentioned further down in that thread. Give it a shot if SuperSu says you aren't rooted.

I have SuperSu.apk, but I'm having difficulty loading it onto this phone. When I plug my S3 in, it shows two drives(the phone and the SD card), and I can simply drag and drop files to/from the phone. But when I plug in this phone, it says the phone is ready to use(and I've installed the drivers), the phone shows up in the ADB, and the phone's file system shows up in the Eclipse DDMS...

but the file system doesn't appear in My Computer...

Install Dropbox onto both your computer and your phone. Sign in to each, place apk in your Dropbox folder on your computer, then open Dropbox on your phone and it should sync automatically. You'll have to tap the file and download it to your phone. Make sure you have Unknown Sources checked in the Security section in Settings or it won't let you install the apk. You'll have to locate it on your SD card using a file manager like Astro or ES File Explorer. After that just select and install.

You can also install apps via ADB in cmd prompt which would probably be a lot quicker, but if your computer doesn't see your phone like it should, then ADB probably won't either. I'd say you probably have the wrong driver installed.

Give me a minute, and I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: Did you use the driver from the thread I posted previously or a different one?

ADB does recognize it though. I downloaded the driver from the LG website.

How can I install using ABD? I'm going to search and try...

I guess I could try pushing the file to the SD card and then installing it on the phone.

You need root to install via ADB, but I'll post the commands anyway for reference sake. The easiest route is to just install the correct driver. Uninstall the one you have installed now and use this one:

http://www.junefabrics.com/bin2/LGDriver.exe

Install via ADB commands:

cd C:\adt-bundle-windows\sdk\platform-tools (or wherever you have it installed)

adb push nameofapk.apk /sdcard/nameofapk.apk

adb shell

pm install /sdcard/nameofapk.apk

If the app doesn't show after successful install, then reboot and it should be there as long as ADB didn't throw you any error messages.

For ClockWorkMod Recovery use the guide outlined in this post...after successfully rooting of course.

Actually, this recovery is probably better.

Extract v5.0.28 recovery.img and place in the topmost directory of your SD card.

Extract flash_image and place in /system/bin using ES File Explorer (because it's free).

Open terminal emulator and enter:

su
cd /system/bin
chmod 0755 flash_image
cd /
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

If you don't get an error, then go to the Play Store and install Quick Boot. Open and try booting into CWM recovery.

Search button to select, return button to return, home button to scroll.

Are you using ADB to install or a file manager from the phone itself? What error message are you getting?

I just used ADB to install SuperUser with this command...

ADB install C:\Users\User\Documents\APK\Superuser.apk

On this phone, I can't find a file manager. On my S3, I can. This is an older phone, but works great.

I'm going to try CheckRoot now...

That's basically what root is...malware, I mean. An exploit to gain administrative privileges on your phone. Disable your AV for a few minutes while it does it's thing. I'm surprised your AV didn't flag SOC when you tried that.

I read somewhere that UnlockRoot installs adware and shit.

Is there another way?

I did come across a thread when I first started this project on this phone, and it had some IMG files that I downloaded. I'll find it and link it. It was on the XDA site.

There may be another way that we could try, but it's kind of a last resort. Manually install recovery via adb/fastboot, use recovery to flash SU binary (which should include the superuser apk), then install BusyBox via the Play Store installer. May or may not work, but we'd have to be sure which binary your phone requires, but I haven't found that yet.

After some more digging, it looks like the Unlockroot Pro guy is guilty of stealing someone else's code and labeling it as his own. It's not like he's the devil, but still, if he's shady enough to steal code, then I can certainly understand why you'd want to stay away.

Try this updated SOC, and if that doesn't work, then I'll look for the proper SU binary so we can try the manual route.

Super One Click will almost always trigger your AV because ZergRush is basically a trojan that uses an exploit in Android to gain root privileges for the user. Most of those commenters don't understand what they're downloading.

Edit: read the last bit at the end of Super One Click Op http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...90&postcount=1

I know it may sound like a bad idea and a total troll, but it's not. You have to temporarily disable your AV to run SOC. If not, your AV removes the actual root payload after you extract it from the zip before it can be delivered to your device and it won't work.

I haven't tried downloading it yet. Usually these types of files aren't even flagged by my AV. But I know that UnlockRoot was.

The original link from the XDA site to SOC is http://shortfuse.org/ and the download is down right now. I'll do more searching tomorrow, but I have to go to sleep. I've been drinking Mountain Dew + Cough Syrup with Codeine this evening...

Lol, same here about the sleep. The CNET link I posted works just fine, but I found two other mirrors to the same latest version of SOC. Any one of them will work. One way or the other, we'll get that damned thing rooted for you.

Did not work. This is what SOC had at the end....

Right after it rebooted the phone, the phone went back to the blue TracFone Wireless screen, and then went back into the system. All of the programs that require root access, wont run.

Also, I noticed this...

It never asks anything about a "mass data storage" like my S3 does. But the files are all viewable in the ADB and in the Eclipse IDE.

If not, install it from the Play Store, then install Busybox, open it and install Busybox.

I already had SuperUser installed. SU said it didn't have root access.

As far as the Play Store, I have no account yet and I don't want to set one up until I get a legit Android phone(which will be soon).

One thing I haven't tried, are the other options...ZergRush and PSnueter. I tried all of the options with the other SuperUser application.

Also, do you know of a button combination to manually boot your phone into bootloader mode? I've looked and can't it.

If you don't know how, then list all physical buttons on your phone and we'll try combos until we find one that works. If you can manually boot into bootloader mode (and don't see the word 'locked' anywhere), then we *might* be able to fastboot flash a custom recovery via cmd prompt. From there you can enter a command to reboot into recovery and flash the su binary which will hopefully give you root privileges. It's the long way around, but it should work as long as your bootloader isn't locked.

As far as the Play Store, I have no account yet and I don't want to set one up until I get a legit Android phone(which will be soon).

One thing I haven't tried, are the other options...ZergRush and PSnueter. I tried all of the options with the other SuperUser application.
SOC uses the ZergRush exploit to gain root. I've never used PSnueter, so I don't know much about it. You can give it a shot, though.

Yes, I can get to this recovery screen by either holding down the Home+Camera+Power buttons while turning on the phone, or by hold down the VolDown+Camera+Power buttons while turning on the phone.

Holding the camera+power buttons while turning on the phone will not boot into the recovery.

I wonder if there's a way to boot into a downloader like on my S3.

Try volume up + camera + power.

It might work in safe mode as long as ADB see your phone.

Connect to your computer, fire up a cmd prompt, cd to your platformtools directory of the SDK, then enter "adb reboot oem-unlock" without quotations and see if that does anything.

CMD showed no errors and the phone rebooted when I entered...

adb reboot oem-unlock

It's at the main screen though...I think it just rebooted.
