The tried and true method of starting out in pyro without doing something incredibly stupid... is to start with smoke mix, learning to roll paper casings, then black powder and learning how to improve its performance and make blackmatch, spollettes, and stars with it and variations on it. And making dextrin... By this point you have all the skills and knowledge to make reliable fuse, rockets, fountains, smoke bombs, aerial shells, and more... Only using craft paper, glue, string, potassium nitrate, charcoal, sulfur, dextrin, and sugar. Somewhere around here you get interested in more energetic compositions, so you get the chems to make flash and play around with it a bit seeing just how pronounced various variables are on its performance. You have built a respect for its power and danger. NOW you are probably ready to make small amounts of primary explosives... and/or, a few more chemicals and metal powders later and every firework you have ever seen is suddenly so easy to make... and believe me aerial shells are fun to scale up to sizes much bigger than you would be able to buy at roadside firework stands.

^Many noobs have followed a course similar to this and they are mostly still around today. Avoid metal casings. Sure its better confinement... but there are compositions and explosives out there that will be just as loud as your COBs... when done with the same amounts in thin paper casings. No shrapnel risk. You can stand and watch it from closer range. You can feel the kick in your chest without having to cower behind a barrier.

Or you will become yet another kiddiot who made a few COBs, learned about AP or flash, and some time later ended up in the hospital because he thought he had mastered explosives, when all he mastered was following directions without really understanding fully what he was doing. There are thousands of stories along these lines, and many end up in newspapers... then soccer moms read them and call for increased restriction on chemicals... and this just repeats over and over again... today do you know what most people consider the scariest experience in college chemistry class? 1. What accomplishments? You blew up a metal casing or tried to with some pre-made powder that you probably don't even know the composition of all while risking your life because your dumb enough to use a metal casing.

TOTSE BB forum was never quick fun with bombs. The textfiles were there against the wishes of the BB forum regulars... Including the mods. Believe me we tried many times to get Jeff to take them down, or at least replace the completely crap ones with something else... There was even an effort to put a text file up that pointed out the few text files there that were pretty much accurate...

The forum description here will change very soon to take out "weapons" and when we get a mod the forum will be mostly a BB clone. Bombs are not fun. A bomb is an explosive device of some kind which the user intends to use to kill, maim, destroy some one elses property, etc. IE its a bad idea. Its the kinda thing that tends to lead to prison and being someone's bitch... OR if you are under 18 you end up having a harder time getting jobs, loans, into schools, etc in the future... And if you somehow miraculously escape from having trouble in those areas... You get this stigmata about you being some kind of terrorist. And your friends (or enemies) will continue to bring it up over and over again, and somehow it always seems to happen right when a police officer or school official is walking by. Because bombs/killing/destruction of others property/etc = terrorist/anarchist/trouble... The exception is smoke bombs, which are harmless.

A firework is festive. An explosive device/charge is ambiguous, it could be used to break rock, cut pipe, pure experimentation, amusement, etc... IE hey lets test to see how high an ouch of black powder will throw that anvil! Or hey I wonder how big of a dent 200g of [insert explosive here] will put in that 1/2" steel plate! Or hey, I wonder what effect various lifting charges will have on this gas fireball! Its fun and understanding what you are doing makes it more safe. Not safe like hey lets just stand here and hold sparklers, safe like hey, yeah lets det a few Kg of some explosive over there, but wear safety glasses and know what we are messing with so we don't fuck up and die.

You can order chemicals online, its not that big of a deal... So long as your parents trust you to not fuck up. If your parents don't trust you, it might be for a good reason. I have ordered almost all my chemicals online aside from charcoal, sulfur, dextrin, and boric acid which I found OTC. I would have gotten potassium nitrate OTC too, but I found a good deal online for 50lbs and jumped on it. My parents even got me a nice book about amateur manufacture of fireworks, and bought me chemicals before I was 18 as a birthday present and a few more times before I was 21. If they trust you, and you can explain what you intend to do, its not that big of a deal.

This thread got boring, but I think it might be worth one more laugh to say that I'm actually 21 and know a lot more about pyro than I let on. I have made my own comps, and I strongly prefer carboard tubes for casings(less than lethal, and they're so much fun to glue ). Destruction's never been a goal of mine, I just like to hear bangs.
