Aussie Zokleteers: What ISP do you use and how good is it?

I'm sure all of you know that Australia is the laughingstock arse-end of the internetrical world, with no relief in sight for a few years at least. I'm getting my internets connected soon but I want a little idea as to which ISP is the least shit, in terms of speed, stability and price.
Suggestions for which ISPs to avoid are more than welcome too, thankyou.

I use Telstra Bigpond. Do not get Bigpond under any circumstances. From what I hear Optus is one of the better ISPs out there, but the faggots won't run a cable up to my house because it's too expensive.

Just a good ol-fashioned ADSL2 connection, nothing fancy. I'm pretty sure it's available in my area.

I was a Optus business customer for 4 years, I phoned them up one day because I was on a 20Gb plan and it wasn't enough for my needs. Some drop kick offered me 4Gb more wireless USB for $59 a month. I said that's hardly useful since I burnt through 20gb in 2 weeks. He said sorry that's his best offer...

Internode was churned from Optus in 5 days, it was paperless and I've had no problems with them at all. It's a linux friendly ISP too if you do have connectivity issues. But I put my password into my router and it was off. Faster connection than Optus aswell (7mb / sec from speedtest.net)...

Yeah I have heard bad things about TPG also. Then again ADSL2 just tends to be inconsistent in my experience regardless.

I've been on TPG since before Broadband even came to this area, and other than a slight problem with syncing my router to their servers* i have had no problems with them. Cheap for ADSL 2, too.


*If I changed a setting, saved that configuration, it wouldn't send until the next time I saved a setting, which means that their servers were always one config behind the router.

Essentially two different download limits 14GB off, 7GB on for example - between 12am-7am is off peak (varies between carriers) and all else is on. Between 12-7 you get the 14 gigs, and when it hits 7 you start using the 7GB pool.

Also: OPTUS currently. Relatively good service, but it's generally for low-bandwidth users. Switching to iiNet soon.

I hate deals where you have to pay if you go over quota, which is why, apart form being ripped off, I left Bigpond.


Now I'm with TPG, and I'm very satisfied with the pricing and more importantly the service. Zoklet can get slow-ish, but that's Zoklet's fault, not my ISP's. They only shape the speed down (make it closer to broadband speed) once you've exceeded your data limits - the good thing is if you exceed your limit off peak, only that will be slowed down, and on peak will still be broadband speeds. It's way better than fucking charging you.

But I don't exceed my limits anyway - so the shaping doesn't even affect me. I'm on the 25GB plan (10on/15off), so call me an idiot for thinking about changing to the $49.99 50GB (25/25) plan just for shits and giggles. I don't do anywhere near that much downloading, but I'd almost get the deal and download shit for the sake of it just because it's pretty cheap. And because the massive fuck off billboard near the train station in Albury brainwashes me every couple days.

Which providers you been with?
I've been on iinet, Westnet (with the very apt goatse logo), Optus, AAPT, and Bigpond in the past. I can't compare them on any level though because they've all been different plans in different years in different areas of Australia - but my experience with Optus was only last year, and it was terrible. Dropped out all the time and the worst customer service ever, coupled with stupid prices. Bigpond has the best customer service, but none of their deals suit me, and once agian, stupid prices.

Yes, speed is good (not like with TPG with no capacity) and quality is great. They run excellent mirror server which is unmetered and you can get pretty much any file you like added to it by asking one of the reps at IPGN or Whirlpool to do it.
