He makes excellent points, but I think he's ignoring a very basic principle about reality. He keeps talking about how the government owns us, how they can control us and destroy our souls, but that's only true to a very limited point. Because -

It only exists inside the heads of people. A blue suit is a real object. A big desk covered with papers is a real object. A politician is an agreed-upon social fiction. A president is a social fiction. We agree by majority opinion that yes, we will allow that person to act the role of politician for a time. But there is no part of the physical person you can point to and say, "This is where he is a politician." It's the same with money, policemen, soldiers, laws, they're all just agreed-upon fictions, games of pretend. The physical objects exist. The ideas attached to them don't.

What this means is, the government can be ignored. We're free at any time to stop pretending they're real and do whatever the hell we want, to break "rules". They can try to force their fictional view of reality on you by trying to take away your money or locking up or killing your physical body. But it's so easy to slip through these traps, if you're just willing to stop playing pretend.

And he's ignoring another point about human existence...total government oppression *never* works. If they push things too far, the people always rise up and overthrow it, declare an age of freedom from tyranny, and then install a new, cleaner model of government. This one will eventually run down too, become corrupt, broken, and eventually need to be replaced again. It's just a system of balance in human nature, oppression and freedom, over and over. If you don't know history, you don't know anything.

I highly recommend anyone that feels the same should read the Illuminatus and Schroedinger's Cat series by Robert Anton Wilson. If you can push through the thousand-something pages of weirdness, he makes some really good points along these lines.

Naw, I'm not proposing some violent change. I do think true anarchy, voluntary order without leadership, would be an interesting experiment, but I doubt it would last in the face of billions of years of primate pack behavior instinct telling us we need to be led by alpha males.

Human beings, are very interesting creatures. Sun, water and land don't last forever though and we should find the best possible way of making them last. That's our real task, as a species, overall. Now someone may think differently than another and kill that person or "collection of thoughts" but really, can you kill your own mind? Then you're truly a free individual. Do you feel weird walking down the street at night amongst people and more yourself in the woods? Maybe it's because our minds are so overwhelming that we always feel self-conscious.
