Default The good ole' Poison Ivy

Hello Zoklet!

A note to mods: it was my best guess that this would go in F&F, but it might be under BI or something. move it if you see fit.

Anyway, I heard something about extracting the poison from poison ivy, and possibly poison sumac, as a liquid. Anyone have any ideas? You could use gloves to get the leaves/stems, and then, well, frankly, I don't know. After it was extracted, it could then be used a variety of ways (eg. painting a toilet seat, the rim of a glass of water, ect)

Urushiol? Ether extraction, I'd imagine... a question for F&B perhaps.

This is a seriously bad idea--breathe the fumes and you might have blisters all inside your lungs.

BTW, the u-stuff isn't a toxin so much as an allergen, which is why poison ivy does not affect everyone.

^ That.

You wouldn't have to extract anything, just tearing up some leaves and shaking them up in some water would make a pretty strong mix for your purposes I'd imagine.

But don't do it.

a basic tincture preparation should provide you with what you want

a tincture is prepared by soaking 1 part dried plant material in 3 parts 40% alcohol solution for 10 days, stirring the solution for a few minuets every day. after which the solution is strained and bottled

Any equipment you use may get uroshiol on it, which can remain active for a long time. I would make sure you clean off your equipment very carefully, or you may get a reaction months later and not know where it came from.

Tyrael's got the right of it. Tinctures have been made for centuries, and they work for a reason. Usually they're for ingestion though...

actually I've found tinctures are best administered sublingually i.e. under the tongue. the alcohol makes it sting a bit but it allows the body to absorb actives that are usually destroyed by digestion.

the only problem with this is that i'd have to get the person to put it under their tongue. would it still work on surface areas, eg. a door knob or a woman's makeup brush? I had it in mind for kinda covert stuff, not holding someone down and forcing a liquid down their throat, you know?

I wasn't suggesting you should do that I was simply musing on the best way to administer a medicinal tincture. skin contact should be enough to cause a rash

PROTIP: use an eyedropper to sprinkle a few drops on rolls of toilet paper
