Default 240 volt 4 prong --> 240 volt 3 prong

so my generator has a NEMA L14-20 240 v output and i'd like to hook my lincoln stick welder to it, but my welder has a old school 3 prong, 3 wire plug, while the L14-20 plug i bought is for 4 wires. can i just chop the old plug off and wire the new one in hot wire ground ignoring the neutral wire the four termal plug calls for? thanks in advance &T.

^^ What he said.

Ignore the white neutral and connect it between between the two hot terminals.
