US "Losing the Battle of the Bulge"
US 'losing battle of the bulge'
2009-07-02 07:56
Washington - The United States is losing its battle against bulging waistlines, with two-thirds of Americans now overweight or obese, according to an annual report released on Wednesday.
In the past year, nearly half of the 50 US states saw obesity rates rise and no state saw a fall in the number of people who were obese, according to the sixth annual "F as in Fat" report by the Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
Obesity is defined as having a body mass index - calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilogrammes by his or her height squared in metres - greater than 30.
"The country will never be able to contain rates of chronic diseases and health care costs until we find ways to keep Americans healthier," the report says, pinning more than a quarter of health care costs in the United States on problems linked to obesity.
According to the report, health care costs attributable to Americans' expanding girths are projected to more than double every decade, possibly reaching $956bn a year by 2030.
That would mean obesity would account for one in six dollars spent on health care.
Mississippi, the fattest state
The report also cited other research, which found that obese workers had more than 10 times the number of lost workdays than normal-weight workers - nearly 184 lost workdays per 100 full-time obese employees over a one-year period, versus 14 lost workdays per 100 full-time normal-weight employees.
The southern state of Mississippi held onto the dubious distinction of being the fattest state for the fifth year in a row, with nearly one in three adults and a staggering 44% of children aged 10-17 suffering from obesity, the report showed.
"Mississippi also continues to have the highest rate of physical inactivity and hypertension, and has the second highest rate of diabetes," the report said.
Diabetes alone accounts for 11% of all US health care costs, according to the report.
Obesity rates in 31 states exceeded 25%, and only in the state of Colorado was the percentage of adults who are obese lower than 20%.
But even in Colorado, known as the Rocky Mountain state and prized for its outdoor lifestyle, obesity crept up from 18.4 to 18.7%.
In 1980, the average of obese adults across the United States was 15%.
Childhood obesity
The report blames the upward trend on a number of factors, including the fact that Americans consume an average of 300 more calories per day than they did 25 years ago, eat less nutritious foods, and jump into the car even for trips of less than one mile (1.6 kilometres) instead of walking.
Meanwhile, the percentage of obese and overweight children aged 10-17 was at or above 30% in 30 states, the report said. In no state was childhood obesity lower than 20%.
The worrying trend among children is blamed on poor diet, unsafe or poorly maintained outdoor spaces, and too much time spent in front of the television, computer or games console - activities that also eat into the time that kids could be active.
Obese children are at higher risk of developing heart disease, high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes, and they are more likely to become obese adults, who are at risk from the very same health problems.
"The childhood obesity epidemic is putting today's youth on course to potentially be the first generation to live shorter, less healthy lives than their parents," the report said.
It urged action on the national, state and community levels to fight obesity, but warned that the United States was way off target to meet a goal set by the Department of Health and Human Services of slicing the obesity rate in all 50 states to 15% by next year.
"Clearly that goal will not be met," the report said.

Another reason why America needs to deport all racial non-caucaoids.

You're fucking kidding, right? We're talking about WHITE people here, idiot. 2/3 of the US population DOES NOT CONSTITUTE non-white people.
GTFO my thread.

Re: US "Losing the Battle of the Bulge"
Let's discuss your intellectual shortcomings.
You post a collaberation of letters that suggests 2/3rds of the population is obese or overweight in America and how this and the related healthcare risks cost our healthcare system billions.
I post a scientific study showing that non-whites are more suscept to these health risks.
It is a fact that the majority of obese or overweight people in America are not white.
The majority of the US population is not white anymore thanks to illegal immigration, incorrect classification of "white people" and brown overpopulation.

So the USA is mostly niggerville, now, right, which validates any and all claims you make on the topic?

Re: US "Losing the Battle of the Bulge"
Err... I'll admit to being a little bit confused.
So, according to you, white people in the US will magically lose their fat once all non-whites are removed from society?
I'll have to think about that one for a bit, because it's SERIOUSLY deep.
Secondly... I'm wrong because you think I'm not white?
You're a champion debater, buddy. You logic just bowls me over.

Re: US "Losing the Battle of the Bulge"
It clearly doesn't take much to "bowl" you over, clearly you were born a permanently "bowled over" state. If white people are a minority among fat people, that is, the majority of fat people are non-white, removing them from the USA will greatly reduce the amount of money wasted in the healthcare system and of course increase white happiness, as well as pretty much eliminate us from the "top ten fattest nations" category. Furthermore I never suggested I think you aren't white. It really boggles the mind, how someone could be as handicapped as Valheru.

Hang on. Don't get excited too quickly. I'm deconstructing this for you reeaaal slooow so you can maybe geddit.
So if a) the majority of fat people in the US are non-white, and if b) the majority of US people are FAT (two thirds, in fact), then logically, you are saying that two-thirds of Americans are non-white?
Didn't think so. You just pwned yourself, moron.

Might want to brush up on your mathematics. I know that third-grade education isn't helping, but do try. It's pretty basic.
66.9M obese white people
vs.
16.7M obese black people
=
84M total
That's a 20% decrease, tops.
So, not only do you fail at this retarded assertion that obese blacks outnumber obese whites, but suggest that being out of the top 10 fattest nations proves a good thing when you still have nearly 30 percent of your population being fatasses.

Then you have a warped sense of fat. In 2007 56.8% of your adults were overweight, 20.9% of adults were obese and 13.6% of your children were obese.
Admittedly, Massachusetts was only the 48th fattest state, but those figures are still alarming.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
Non-whites, not blacks.
Non-whites =/= blacks alone.
Nonwhites outnumber obese whites, removing them from the population would effectively remove the obese population to below ten percent.
But thank you for showing us that removing blacks alone would decrease the obese population by 20%, a substantial number of fat people and especially when you consider they represent less than fifteen percent of the total US population. Self-owned.
Better luck next time.

Re: US "Losing the Battle of the Bulge"
Race is a fucking retarded argument.
50 years ago black people weren't fat the way they are today.
You can't use the black people's fault card.
Black people didn't make McDonalds.
Fat people are fat because they're lazy, be they white or black or mexican. You can say whatever you want about which people are more lazy, but that's for another debate.

Again, mathematics.
According to your figures, thats 16.7M Blacks + 15M Hispanics, a rough total of 33.7M nonwhites. That's still less than half the obese whites.
So you're still wrong.
Incidentally, that also leaves roughly a third of the remaining entirely white population as being fatasses. Less than 10%? 66M out of 223M. Do the math, Oreo. Assuming you gots da edjamacashun fer dat dar shit.

Re: US "Losing the Battle of the Bulge"
Firstly, I don't see why this thread had to dengenerate into a race description, becuase even if race had anything to do with it you would realize Mississippi (the fattest state) and smiliar states (which are the root of the obesity problem) are predominately white , over 60 percent in Mississippi. Although its not likely 2/3 of the obese Americans are the same 2/3 that are white (in Mississippi), its still implied that obviously more whites are obese.
To add more irony to the white supremest racist view that non whites are the problem is the fact these racist southern USA are often the heaviest and unhealthiest.
But if we go back to the general problem of overweight americans, its interesting how this article ties overweight eating to not just health concerns but to productivity. I think a society where attempts to make children more literate (and therefore more productive) are favoured over general physical fitness does not help at all the problem of American (and generally Western) overconsumption. I'm not saying children should be playing dodgeball instead of learning how to read, but there should be strong emphasis on general health and healthy living. Its not surprising the American mentality of productivity and stimulating economies leads to overconsumption which leads to obesity and other diseases when gym classes and other important societal lessons are emphasized over strong business values and being a productive working member of society.
I believe if society was more concerned about personal well being and individual happiness, rather than productivity
