I was wondering what everyones favorite artists were?

I like Tom Masse, LOVE ralph steadman, and martin witfooth.

Turner is my absolute favourite, followed closely by Monet, although I'm especially fond of his light-studies rather than just the waterlillies, which I'm honestly not nuts over.

Although I generally go for impressionism and romanticism and all things flighty and romance-y, and consequently artists like Delacroix, Chardin and Gericault, I've also been known to idolize Rococo-era painters like Fragonard and Watteau, and some of Constable's stuff drives me mad.

I've never been a fan of classic or neo-classic styles, although I love love love Jacques-Louis David's historical renderings of the French Revolution, and there aren't a lot of contemporary artists that I can really get into. Anything post-Post Impressionism and I get a bit tetchy. Lichetenstein is groovy, though, I will admit.

i think that's why our art history course stopped at post-impressionism. Even the University knows that there's nothing after it that can be compared to what was in pre-impressionism. I think that this is due to the fact that after that people "got away" with too much shitty artwork.

but how come you don't like any artists from the "darker" ages? Albrecht Durer had incredible prints and Leonardo da Vinci had great drawings (forget about Gioconda, any sepia sketch is better than that). Pieter Bruegel, Hieronymus Bosch, Hans Holbein...

i'd like to object that your list contains no sculptors. Surely you can't omit people like Michelangelo (Pieta and the non-finito sculptures), Bernini (Fountain of the Four Rivers, Rape of Proserpina) and Rodin (St. John the Baptist Preaching, The Gates of Hell, The Kiss).

Turner is ok, and monet i dont really care too much for.

For me, the art has to be....hmmm i dunno how to put it.

Well, i mean, look at the artist i listed and youll understand what i mean.

It has to be unique. With people like turner and monet, its just not unique enough for me.

I can appreciate what they did for art as far as advancing styles and everything, but i mean, half the stuff they painted, anyone coulda painted.
May not havbe turned out exactly the same or as good, but still the same generall thing.

And DaVinci. AHHHH what can i say about DaVinci. I dont know if i considered him an artist as much as of course an inventor, but now that i think about it, i guess he was just as much an artist as inventor.

I want to buy some books on his sketches. Theres a recreation of his journals that you can get.

For more traditional art I like Rembrandt, or for classical sculpture it's gotta be Rodin. The gardens of the Rodin museum in Paris are just amazing.

More modern or contemporary artists I like Damien Hirst, Piet Mondrian, Francis Bacon, Tony Smith, loads of them.

Yeah, it's not the subject matter I'm crazy about; its generally the colours and atmosphere, an the intricate, overwrought details. To be honest, I like all of those artists, but my affections lie in more dramatic, fanciful kind of art. Pre-renaissance painting, as a rule, tends to be really depressing, it emphasizes mortification of the flesh and religious values and suffering and death, and its generally very condemning. I prefer the celebratory aspect of later art-celebratory of life and beauty and the human form. Although I saw an exhibit of medieval etchings and woodcarvings at the Chicago Art Institute (which included a lot of Durer, actually) and had an artgasm.

Ah, I haven't even thought of sculptors!! See, I don't really have any formal education or anything, I just learn about what I'm interesting in from books and the internet, and I haven't ever really devoted any time to sculpture so I'm kind of clueless. Well, that's not entirely true, I know Rodin well, and Bernini and Michaelangelo too, but that's about it. I love "The Ecstasy of St. Theresa," and the entire tomb of Pope Julius II is beautiful and has an incredibly interesting story behind it, but yeah, I'm a sculpture noob in general.

that's a prevalent problem, when people hear the word "artist", they immediately think of painters. However, there are also downright incredible architectural achievements (San Marco Basilica, St. Paul Cathedral in London by Sir Christopher Wren, Florence Cathedral with the dome by Brunelleschi, etc)

if you're interested in sculpture, you might want to check out Giambologna, Ghiberti and Brancusi. Sculpture is hardcore stuff, not many can do it right and few have the patience to do it right, hence the small number of truly valuable sculptors. Sure, just like in any other field of visual art, any wanker can hit a block of stone with a chisel and call it abstract, but it shows when they don't have skill.

Personally I quite like Pop art and surrealism. I dont know much about Dada but Im facinated by the concept.
