Shot glass stuck inside a glass
http://www.totse.com/community/showthread.php?t=2101512
The full thread is posted above. I'll just copy and paste the emails I had with a professor of physics at my university.
Quote:
The problem is that I've got a shot glass stuck inside of a regular
glass. I'm trying to free the shot glass from the outer glass by any
means necessary without breaking the shot glass. I do not care if the
outer glass is shattered in the process of recovering the shot glass,
because the shot glass is much more irreplacible than the outside
glass. I've tried heating the outside glass with very hot water in
order to make the glass expand enough to free the inner glass - no
such luck.
Other ideas were: Put something inside of the outer glass (but not in
the inner glass) that would expand and cause the outer glass to
shatter in an outward direction. Hammering the outer glass didn't seem
like a good idea because that would apply inward force on the outer
glass, possibly causing the smaller glass within to break.
The dimensions of the outer glass are: 6.5in x 2.5in. The shot glass
is about 1.5 inches from the bottom of the outer glass and 2.5 from
the top.
A picture of the glasses is here: http://zoklet.net/otg/showpic.php?id=111
The tools I have at hand are: heating elements, ice, water, a hammer,
a nail driver, and a few other household tools.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

... our approach must involve contraction of the shot glass with simultaneous expansion of the outer glass. So I suggest filling the shot glass with ice or very cold water and then immersing the outer glass in warm or hot water. Gently applying torque to the shot glass may then break the seal between the two and allow the shot glass to be extracted (had you reviewed the notes from my Physics 200 class of Monday, February 11th, you'd know that the coefficient of static friction between two glass surfaces can be as high as 0.94, which makes this a damn difficult prospect - I realize that you're not in the class, but can you really call yourself "liberally educated" if you confine your reading to the kind of excremental drivel assigned by the English Department?).
Oh, yeah, one more thing: this procedure might well result in the entire contraption shattering due to the temperature differential at the points of contact between the glasses, so I'd wear protective gloves while doing it (and it wouldn't hurt to retain counsel in preparation for the lawsuit against the purveyor of this advice as well as the obviously neglectful party who put you in touch with him).
Best of luck,
Dr. (edited)

Eh?
Did it work? If not, why not try breaking the outer glass, starting from the top. In bite-sized pieces. It wouldn't exert too much pressure on the shot glass, and if breaking the outer one doesn't matter..

Can you drill a hole in the outside glass, pour some oil in, and push it out with a screwdriver or something?

just break the outside glass, shatter the bottom and it will fall apart

Re: Shot glass stuck inside a glass
Forget smashing it. Just get a metal file or any other object that will wear away at the glass and SLOWLY work at the outside glass.
You could also cut the outside glass with a ehem a "glass cutter". Though glass cutting is reserved more for flat glass since you dont give a crap what happens to the outside glass cut that shit up.
That aside. haha great proff.

Re: Shot glass stuck inside a glass
If you cool the shot glass and heat the outside glass then the shot glass will only fall farther (further?) into the O/S glass - if it is right side up. Place the 2 glasses in the freezer with the shot glass full of water and allow the water to freeze. Remove and allow the glass to heat up but not enough for the ice to melt. Now turn the glass upside down and place over a sponge. Coat the O/S glass all over on the outside with Lighter fluid and ignite the lighter fluid. Use the kind for cigarette lighters. This should burn hot enough to expand the O/S glass - allowing the shot glass to fall free. But it would not be hot enough to break the O/S glass. That is also why the entire outside of the glass should be coated with the Lighter fluid - for even heating to avoid shattering the glass.

Re: Shot glass stuck inside a glass
Can you get any liquid inside the outer glass, but under the inner glass?
Assuming you can, what would happen if you sealed the top, and began pumping water in slowly? If you were gentle enough with the pressure, you could probably dislodge it.
Or, fill the outer glass, under the inner glass, with water and then freeze it. When it turns to ice and expands, it will dislodge the inner glass....or shatter it.
Personally though, I would just get a blowtorch, hold the O/G with a pair of tongs, burn the hell out of the underside of the glass, then dunk it in some ice water.[Could probably freeze some water in the inner glass first for good measure]
Or get some needle nose pliers and take it apart piece by piece.

If that is possible - as it should be since glass to glass is not usually a sealed joint - he could allow the bottom to fill with liquid and then turn the glasses upside down and slam his palm onto the bottom of the glass which may enable a hydraulic shock wave to hit the shot glass and free it from the outer glass.
I have busted the bottom out of long neck beer bottles by slamming the opening of the neck with my open palm. Of course I replaced the beer with water first.

A shot glass isn't hard to steal from a bar..
And they arn't exactly expensive to buy, either.

Re: Shot glass stuck inside a glass
Soak a piece of thick twine in rubbing alcohol and tie it around the outer glass at mid level. Light it on fire and let it burn for at least 8 seconds, then drop it into cold water. The glass will break along the twine.
My friends and I make grav bongs out of liquor bottles with this method. I can almost guarantee it will work, but it might not separate on the first shot.
