Practical self defense tools.
Now, I live in Canada...so legally carrying a gun is a little on the err...impossible side, but for reasons I shan't disclose, I need a practicle measure of self defense other than what I can physically do with my body. Preferably it has to be relatively concealable, and I've got a ton of knives, so those can be ruled out as well. A stungun/taser would be cool, are those legal in Canada? Anyway, gimme some idea's for practical weapons I can use. The most important part being their legality in Canada. Please, don't bother posting anything illegal...if I wanted to risk that, I'd just get a gun. Cost isn't really an issue, but I'd prefer something cheap. Although, I don't want to sacrifice quality just to save a couple bucks.
I'd do the research myself, since I'm capable like that...but I can't seem to find the proper information for someone in Canada for some reason.
School's approaching, so it's time to get serious.

Get a bit of wood and work on it with some sandpaper to shape it into an impact weapon. Keep it in your pocket.

Extendable batons would be considered illegal weapons in Canada. You could try a kubotan.

Re: Practical self defense tools.
why do you need another weapon if you have knives...? just get a hunting knife
or a mace not that spray shit. maces are 1337 and can easily be hidden in a trench coat. though since you'd have to wear a trench coat you can just join the trench coat army and when you join that you have to get guns. preferably shotguns.
mini crow bars are the shit as well http://blog.borderlinx.com/wp-content/uploads/beer.jpg
i just stick with my knives though.

You're a silly cunt, man.
You asked for a practical weapon to carry around, and when people suggest practical, every day carry weapons, you act like a dick.
What sort of weapon are you looking for, then?
It's narrowed down now, seeing as impact weapons aren't serious enough for you.

Re: Practical self defense tools.
We need more info. Is there just one person you expect to hurt you or a whole group? Will you be in some crime-ridden area and need something to fight of muggers or gangs? How willing are you to go into legal gray (black) areas?
Well, a few suggestions. Knives are good for 1v1, or 1v2, but a single knife against a large group of attackers isn't going to help you much unless you're good at what you do. Alternatively, knives will fail if you are facing skilled or armed attackers. I do like the idea of mace or pepper spray though. It should work against groups of armed or not, but depending on how strong it is, it might not work. Legalities will determine the strength of purchasable pepper sprays. You might also want to look into "Bear Spray," which is actuyally sold as pepper spray for getting rid of bears, so it might be stronger than laws allow because it is designed for use on animals. Plus, bear spray shoots a stream for like 30ft, whereas pepper sprays may only cover a few feet. Aside from those, if you want to be really covert, most brands of oven cleaner will work as well (the ones that contain NaOH, aka Sodium Hydroxide). Another option is to get a taser/stungun. If local laws prohibit them, but you want one anyway, some of the smaller online distributors might still ship to you, especially if it's an auction website where the seller is someone who doesn't run a business and wouldn't know the local legalities. Tasers have range to them so they could help you against armed opponents, but if there are numerous opponents they do not reload quickly and will leave you fucked. Stun guns do not have range so they will not be too helpful against guys with guns, but they will be substantially easier to wield against someone with a knife or a group of people. Finally, though, is my personal favorite. Get an airgun that looks as realistic as possible and keep in in you pants when you might run into trouble. If you see someone/group approaching you that you think might cause you problems, just lift up your shirt to reveal the handle and give them a look like, "do ya feel lucky, punk?" This will work against muggers/gangs who are just walking the streets looking for victims. They generally wont try shit on the crazy guy walkin' around with the gun in his pants.
If you want paragraphs, you're SOL.

Re: Practical self defense tools.
Knives aren't good self defense weapons. They're great tools, and very good murder weapons, but carrying one for self defense isn't the best idea.
A knife provides no deterrent factor, you can't pull a knife and end a fight before it starts. Statistically speaking, pulling a knife actually starts fights more often than it prevents them (whereas drawing a gun has the opposite effect, according to the same statistics).
Knife fighting is dangerous. Anybody who's been in a knife fight will tell you that win or lose, you'll get cut. Knife wounds can be serious, if not fatal, injuries. Defending yourself is about preventing harm to your physical being. This makes knives kind of counterintuitive for such applications.
Knives don't have stopping power, either. You can mortally wound someone quite easily (hence why they're good murder weapons), but they'll continue to be a threat. Killing your attacker might seem useful, but it doesn't mean anything if he can still slash your throat in the process. You want something that will physically incapacitate a threat, not just give cause serious but ignorable injury.
So you want to go with something else if you can.
If you're being attacked and you have to reach for a weapon, a knife is generally better than nothing, but when you have the choice of things to carry for self-defense, there are much better choices.

Mace like Fox Labs 5.3 or Defense Technology X2 360.
Or maybe something like this:
Not sure if it could be carried that way legally, but you may be able to make a "necklace" similar to that that can be quickly ripped off and bought into action.

Re: Practical self defense tools.
Bicycle "U" lock, dog choker chain, miniature baseball bat, 4 D cell mag light, aerisol sunscreen and bic lighter, length of guitar string with wooden handles tied at either end, plastic bag, multitool, black egg (empty an egg fill it with powdered glass chili powder and sand then paint egg with driveway sealer to strengthen it. Crush the egg in your hand and throw it in an assailants eyes), extendable squeegee handle minus squeegee head (acts like an extendo) miniature crowbar, house keys, brass knuckles that double as belt buckle, pocket sand, earbud head phones (whip / strangulation), if you ride a bike wear cycling gloves and hide tacks in the knuckles, wrist braces make ideal impact weapons (just say you have carpo tunnel and need to wear it), canes, crutches, this http://www.coldsteel.com/deltadart.html, this http://www.coldsteel.com/honeycomb.html, this http://www.coldsteel.com/kogaseries.html, this http://www.coldsteel.com/pepper-spray.html, this too http://www.coldsteel.com/pocketshark.html, this http://www.coldsteel.com/minipal.html, WD-40, ashtma inhaler, ballpoint pen, thats all I can think up at the moment.

Re: Practical self defense tools.
I have a Surefire E2D and it's great. One of my favorite impact weapons. Also great as a flashlight, brighter than a big ol maglite. Too bad the lithium batteries are about $2 each (up to $10 each in retail stores which is fucking ridiculous).
I also recommend Fox Labs 5.3 OC Spray. It's an excellent product. Get a 2oz or larger flip-top. Have someone spray you before you carry it, you need to know the effects and what to expect if it's ever blown back at you by the wind or if somone takes the can and uses it against you.

Why don't you just carry around a fucking rock. You can't have a gun, knives will only get you fucked up and taken from you or you'll kill someone with it and be twice as fucked. Just use a fucking rock. You can throw it, bash with it, fucking punch with it, whatever. You can find them anywhere.

If Azure is only going to spew cunt and bleeding fuck all over the more promising and serious suggestions then he can have a basic "fuck you" answer, and in all honesty a rock is probably the best he can get in an "OH FUCK what do I have to work with?" setting. Besides that everything else has been covered, and I'm half expecting people to start posting pictures of ladders, lawn chairs, and dead fetuses ( they seem to be a recurring theme around here.). So fuck it case closed good luck don't let those spades kick you around at school too much or they might make you their fuck post.

Yea if you're an idiot who's never had to use a knife or has never practiced using one. Knives are perfectly fine so long as you're not some physically challenged retard or some kidiot who stabs randomly.

Its made of metal and has pointy edges, the trick is to blind them, stab them and then you have a good couples seconds of a headstart.
