I would highly recommend it. I've read it a few times b/c it's so good.

Interesting thing is, I read it before I ever saw the movie. Afterward, I rented the movie and was incredibly disappointed. The book is infinitely richer and more elaborate. The movie was incredibly lacking.

To this day I have absolutely no idea why the Godfather is considered one of the greatest movies ever made (by some).

Anyone ever read it?

It's by Mario Puzo, who seems like a good author but the Godfather is his crowning book.

I read the Fourth K, and was mildly disappointed.

It's on my list, I've never read it.
This might be the only case where a book is actually shorter than the movie based on it.

Its regarded as a good movie because James Caan dies. Every movie in which James Caan dies is fucking epic.

Do you mean the other way around? Didn't the book precede the movie? Haven't read the last don, although I saw it once at goodwill... should have bought it.

If you enjoyed "The Godfather" I highly suggest Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi. Its the book upon which Goodfellas was based. I was actually amazed at how true to the story Goodfellas stayed to the book, they just left out some minor details and made some minor name changes.

You usually find that with book-born films.

Pretty much every person I've ever met who reads has said that the book is always better than the film. And I have to agree that 99.9% of the time, the book is vastly better than the film based on it.

Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption by Stephen King was a really good short story for me when I was a kid. The film Shawshank Redemption was a great film, quite a few differences from the book but perfectly acceptable for me.

The Running Man was a great book for me when I was a kid. The film left me feeling buttfucked because it was absolutely NOTHING like a book I had so much enjoyed.

I am totally with OP here--The Godfather is arguably one of the best trashy novels of the 20th century . Cutting out the character of the abortion doctor--the one who fixed Lucy's prolapsed uterus--was one of the major errors of the film makers.

Godfather II--one of the best movies ever, surely one of the best sequels.

The film is based on the book; contrary to the mainstream, the film is far better than the novel. Puzo is an okay writer, however what Coppola did with that screenplay was legendary.

You have got to be kidding me. I couldn't disagree more. The movie has absolutely nothing on the book. The story / dialogue and characters are so much richer in the book, something you just can't accomplish to the same extent in the movie.
