How important is protein to exercise
Thread title.
I rarely eat foods that contain more than a few grams every day, and I'd like to know if it'd be worth purchasing bars/mix in powder stuff to get my daily amount?
I couldn't stomach chicken every day.

Re: How important is protein to exercise
So, what? You rarely eat meat? Eat a steak, some mexican, a stir fry, a homemade meat pie or something.

It is one of the only things I eat besides pasta, but I don't want to have to eat it every day to get the amount of protein I need to build muscle as fast as possible, so I was wondering if it is worth investing in protein supplements.

Yes. But only if your going to work out and turn it into muscle. Otherwise it goes to fat.

Re: How important is protein to exercise
Depends what sort of exercise. For cardiovascular exercise, protien is pretty irrelevant, however, if your itention if primarily muscle building, then it's very important and if your training daily, then I'd advise you eat protien (meat) in some form with every meal.
Shakes are quite high in calories, so I'd only advise them if you're training hard regularly, as otherwise it'll just turn to fat, some someone else as mentioned.

So should I only drink a shake before exercise? Or after?

How Importaint?
Very.
OK so if you don't want to eat chicken every day how about tuna, beans, eggs, milk, there are lots of places to get protean from.
Protean shakes are OK, whey is the standard, and some of them don't taste half bad.
If you buy in bulk you can get some Pretty good deals as well, just remember that it's a SUPPLEMENT not a meal replacement.

Re: How important is protein to exercise
Well I think proteins are needed whether you exercise or don't...but yeah if you are exercising, muscles are being built and you are gonna need proteins to do that.

I dislike eggs and tuna, but I eat beans fairly regularly and milk is droves.

Re: How important is protein to exercise
You want to be aiming for at least 100g of protein a day, if not 150 to 200. A postworkout shake with 30 - 50g of protein plus some simple carbs will create an insulin spike to deliver protein into your muscles at its greatest anabolic state.
