casing a house without being suspected

So I need to case a house out that has something stolen from me in it (I mean to get it back). But this house has a large family living there and theres almost always people home it seems. So if anyone has any ideas on how i could watch the people living theres habits without being noticed. its not close enough to my house that i can pass it off, and the people who live there know me. i wouldnt care except i dont want to be suspected after the item disapeers. I know the inside of the building and the small backyard. The main problems though are that they often are coming and going and have very active neighbours. right now iv been limiting it to driving past and hanging in a nearby alley with a good view, but i need way more time to time there routines. the suburbs mean that this is much harder but i really want to pull this off.

this item may or may not be very illegall where i live so it would be better to remain unsuspected. cameras are more elaborate than i think im willing to purchase otherwise that would have been my first choice.

Just rent a car out and remove the rental stickers and labels, park the car facing away from the front of theirs, lay low in the car but just keep watching. Do you know how many people live there and their ages?

You could just search up the address and call sometime during the day from a payphone (make sure no CCTV is nearby or in the phonebox), if no one answers then go and be quick. Don't just take that item, sack the most valuable goods or everything you can so it just looks like a typical burglary and nothing can be linked back to you. I'd imagine your item is valuable since you want it back so much.

This is a tough nut to crack... I live in a neighborhood where people (not me...never shit in your own backyard) steal stuff all the time, so we always have somebody here... ALL the time to prevent that. In 7 years at this house, we're the only ones on the block to NOT be B&E'd...YET... I know there's somebody out there dumb enough to do it... anyways, as I see it you have 3 options:

1)Keep waiting and watching...this is going to require almost constant surveillance and you'll have to be alert and ready to go at the very 1st opportunity.

2)Knock on the door and politely ask to speak privately to the thief saying it's about a topic that could be "rewarding." In your private convo, blackmail the little bastard into giving it back...the reward being that no harm comes to him from either you or local law enforcement.

3)Give up and chalk it up as a lesson learned, then get yourself a bigger and/or better one of whatever it was he stole from you

Sorry if none of these work out... just options to think about.
