My roommate's dog wont gain weight
My roommate has a 6 month old Rottweiler named Ayla that is really, really fucking skinny.
It gets fed at least two big meals a day (she goes to school and I work, when we're home to give her a third meal around lunch we'll put it out for her, but she sometimes doesn't even eat it). She's being fed a kibble/wet mix combo.
She seems totally healthy otherwise, active and happy, but she is so fucking skinny and doesn't seem to be putting on much weight. You can see her fucking ribs, it's not good.
About three weeks to a month ago my friend went out of town and left Ayla with her (retarded) ex-roommate. Apparently at some point she ran out of dog food to feed her, and since she's absolutely retarded the dog probably went without food for a few days and then was fed cat food for the rest of the time. Not cool, cat food sucks for dogs.
Our first guess was worms, and we have a friend that can hook us up with free de-worming medication.
So my questions: what could be wrong with her, and how can we fix it. Also, if we give her the de-worming medication and she doesnt have worms, is it gonna fuck her up.
Were gonna take her to the vet asap, but were right low on cash so if theres any way we can fix this at home itd be appreciated.

Re: My roommate's dog wont gain weight
Worms is the best bet and no the medication won't harm her if she doesn't have them.
Cat food is fine for dogs for a couple of days.

Re: My roommate's dog wont gain weight
Why? It's just the same shit. Random meat and vegies and carbs mixed with crude fats, protein etc - and that's if you get the quality stuff. It just says 'FOR CATS instead of 'FOR DOGS' on the package.
I hate it how some people are so fucking self-righteous about what they feed their pets. Of course, know what you absolutely cannot feed them, and feed them well, just don't be a fussy fool without reason.

Thereès a lot of differences in whatès in it.
For example, thereès almost double the amount of protein in cat food, among other things. Itès not good for them.

Re: My roommate's dog wont gain weight
I've got a 15 month old rottie and he's quite slim, his top half is massive and completely solid, but his back end has always been thin
You can sort of tell in this picture
Vets have only ever said he looks very healthy though, his weight is completely average for his age
If anything it's probably more healthy for large breed dogs like rottweilers to be slightly underweight because of all the hip problems associated with them getting too fat
I have no idea if the worm medicine would harm a healthy dog, i'm sure it'd be safe but I wouldnt risk it just incase
Cat food isn't exactly bad for dogs, just inefficient - it won't cause any real health issues unless it that's all their diet consisted of

Re: My roommate's dog wont gain weight
Dog love turkey and chicken. Cat food contains meat, but some dog food doesn't. Dogs can eat cat food but cats need cat food. They need the meat and meat-related stuff. My dog loved cat food. But dogs will eat anything. My guess is she didn't feed him enough. Let the dog eat as much as it wants instead of feeding at a certain time. Just leave a bowl of food out.
BTW, I would eat canned dog food, but not canned cat food. Its too nasty. But my cats love it.
PP is right. Could be worms too.

Re: My roommate's dog wont gain weight
If you fucks post one more off-topic reply after this post I'm handing out infractions.
xxombie can you find out how much the dog weighs? Is she a picky eater usually? Has she found some other source of food, such as the garbage?
ps don't try to force feed her if she's not eating, could make her worse if she's genuinely ill.
Edit - is this the same dog who had separation anxiety? I think it was you who posted about that... Not certain though.

I'll try to find out how much she weighs. I can tell you right now though it's an unhealthy weight, her ribs and hip bones protrude from her body. Lately it looks like she's put on a bit of weight, but not much.
She's never been a picky eater, she usually eats the food we put out for her without thinking twice. Just when we try to give her an extra meal she sometimes turns it down, which is strange cause she looks like she's starving.
When she was staying with the other person (we don't talk to her now because of how fucking retarded she is, for the record) Ayla probably ate all kinds of shit off the ground. Now she's closely monitored to make sure she doesn't, she responds to "Don't be a scavenger".
I've never posted about this dog before, no.

Re: My roommate's dog wont gain weight
Just leave dry biscuits out during the day along with a small piece of beef brisket. At night/morning place some wet food in with the dry & just let her eat as she feels.
My staffy wouldn't & is still rather picky with dog food. So we would get chicken mince , frozen mixed veges , pasta & garlic & cook it up for her & place that with the biscuits. She would just chomp it down & has started packing the muscle on.
I hope you figure out what's wrong for the sake of the dog.

Re: My roommate's dog wont gain weight
Believe it or not a dog has to be trained to eat its food.....I taught my dog from a early age how important it was to eat his food and how pleased I was that he did so....I have always set his food out and given the boy five minutes to eat.....Should he not do it I will take the food and give it to him the next night.....Also it is important to feed your dog the same amount of food at exactly the same time every night......I raised my buddy from six weeks to his present age of 13 years....He is a healthy german shepard at 105 pounds...

Re: My roommate's dog wont gain weight
exercise him before walks, this represent when dogs used to chase prey for food. and also it could be using up calories due to stress related isusses. is the dog left alone for long periods of time? does the dog and shouted at and hit?
things in the past a dog will forget, beause it is the pass and dogs live in the present, so check for anything that may be tramatising the ddog,,,, sounds silly i know, but could be a serious issue
