Where do you guys stand on the guy as a director? (and author for that matter)

I used to fucking hate that guy, I saw him an arrogant, stupid and sensationalist, but on closer inspection after watching a bunch of his films and reading his book I really appreciate his sense of humor and style of documentary; not only factual (for most parts) but also stylised and entertaining. I do enjoy his social commentary.

This has nothing to do with his politics, but the dude tells outright lies. Bowling for columbine was absolutely full of them.

He's amusing, but the things he makes are not nearly factual enough to be documentaries.

I like most of all that he'd brought the art of documentary making back into vogue. Soon after we had a slew of documentaries like The Corporation, Outfoxed, Super Size Me, Enron etc.

I like his overall style and structure. But his trademark gimmick of getting up in various crooks' face with his camera is kind of shit. Mostly because he himself is pretty shit at confrontation and is wayyy too blunt and obvious with his trolling. "EXCUSE ME MISTER. YOU WANT TO SIGN YOUR KIDS UP FOR IRAQ? YOU WANT TO SIGN YOUR KIDS UP FOR IRAQ? U SEND ALL R KIDS 2 IRAQ Y DONT U SEND UR KIDS 2 IRAQ?"

I can appreciate the honesty in these gestures. Yes... he's confronting crooks with the simple truth and of course they're going to parry him off with the slightest bit of red on their faces. But all his clumsy running around with his microphone kind of makes me wish he'd well... be a bit more sneaky and nasty. I mean... Sacha Baron Cohen could get a fucking terrorist leader on camera. Cohen in general just owns Moore in live confrontation and improvisation and trolling. Of course... for Moore it's harder to get the villains to come to him because they all fucking know his gimmick while Cohen has to make a new one every time. Maybe he should just stop getting in front of the cameras and sticking to writing and directing and getting proxies to do his ground work for him. But then he wouldn't be indulging his ego.

I agree. I like the guy and his movies, but the whole 'go up to a bank and demand to see the ceo', or 'come up with a bag to put the money in that they stole' is kind of lame. He's done it, or something very similar in most of his movies, it's getting old.

Micheal Moore has done a great job at popularising documentaries in main stream cinema, of course documentaries have been around since way back. Any good documentary is a service to the public and in this way I think micheal moore has done a good job of educating the uncritical masses. He is also very entertaining considering the documentary format. That being said hes not the go to guy when you want info on any said issue, rather if you are after the esoteric perspective. I think I can safley say hes done this world a great deal of good compared to anyone posting in this thread.

The Charleston heston bit where he says his famous quote at that rally. That footage was from a previous rally he did and not the one that was scheduled after that little childs death.
