80's nerd glasses the new trend?
Anyone else notice this? Before (currently?) the trend for frames are big thick arms, but now I'm seeing some people with big square black plastic frames. Is this a fad in your region yet?
They certainly make the hipster girls way cuter .

Re: 80's nerd glasses the new trend?
theyve been in fashion for quite a while actually. it started with the whole emo trend if i recall. emoism has since died down, but things like tight jeans and thick rimmed glasses seem to have remained

Yeah, those rims are definitely 80s nerd glasses. I was confused because your OP described these:
...which have been in vogue for a few years now.

Oh, those.
Few of the more outcast but still attractive scene girls at my school wear those.

Those are nice; I know a good deal of women, and some men, too, who wear glasses in this fashion. Usually, wearing those sorts of glasses gives off a waft of exoticism, of hip youth, and a good deal of other things. In this picture, though, it looks a tad overdone, and not very good (the way she's wearing them). It'd look better if they were a tad smaller.
As for m'self, I sport glasses somewhat similar to these:
However, I've been dying to get my hands on these (a very nice 50's retro design):

Either way she's hot. Some girls suit glasses like that and it makes them look kinda sexy.

Plenty of people wear glasses for solely aesthetic purposes, thought doing so is a bit of an exercise in vanity, no? Hell, I only have myopia in my left eye!

I don't know where exactly I've read this, but I do believe that there's a correlation between myopia and higher IQ

Giant round 80s frames that covered half your face?
...yeah they were. Last time I've seen those were on pictures of my mom in college. They looked ridiculous on her, but she has a round face anyways so it just wasn't a good match.

Well, there's a very fine line one has to tread in between the chic/retro/etc and the atrocious & démodé. Mind scouring us up some pictures to give us an idea of those glasses you mean?

I would, but any old family pictures are back at my family's house 400 miles away right now.
But here's a photo from the "awkward family photos" site that illustrates an example of these glasses gone wrong:

Démodé ~~ Word of French origin. Means out of style or fashion, out of use

This. How could you pass up such an opportunity?
EDIT: I did see a gay guy recently wearing these, but I think it was intended to be ironic.

Re: 80's nerd glasses the new trend?
so much of what is fashionable today is dependant on its level of irony as opposed to more traditional ideas of "fashionable on everyone". Which is good because it allows for alot of variety, what is cool and fashionable on one person would not be on another. You have to take into account irony and comfort/"tryhard"-ness.
Gone are the days where things are cool and uncool. Its very good.

Yeah , who knew dressing like a milk man would one day be acceptable
Personally I just go for minimalism , I used to be the kid who wore a bundle of pins on his jacket with a huge backpatch to boot. I guess I'd attribute this change due to age though.
