Default is diphenhydramine exceedingly hard on the liver or kidneys?

I have looked online through as much medical information as I could find and understand, but I haven't found the information I'm looking for. I want to know how efficiently the body processes large amounts of diphenhydramine; meaning does it fuck up the kidneys or liver or is it a relatively simple chemical for the body to process.

I'm asking this because recently I have been taking large amounts (250-600mg) of diphenhydramine NIGHTLY to help me sleep and for it's other interesting effects which for some strange reason I seem to enjoy. I started lifting weights and my back has been hurting near where my kidneys are and I'm worried that it could be resulting from the diphenhydramine. Other then that I have no side effects whatsoever and seem to be otherwise healthy.

TLDR: How efficiently does the body process large amounts of benadryl and does if fuck up the liver or kidneys? Or is it similar to alcohol and rather easily de-toxified?

I've taken like 2 grams before during a past suicide attempt along with a multitude of other psychoactives.....my kidneys are fine = D

Not too sure about heavy, chronic use, though.

Ha that's funny. I'm doing the same thing you are, but at slightly lower dosages. I used to be at around 150mg/night, but as of late have cut back to 75mg due to fear of something along the lines of what you're describing. Upon further investigation, I looked at possible metabolic routes of diphenhydramine. Since to body favors oxidative metabolism, it looks like it would probably break up into diphenyl ketone and dimethyl-ethylamino-alcohol. Looking up both I saw that neither is a known carcinogen, and in both cases the body has a few methods of metabolizing similar compounds. So, I can't say for sure, but it looks like it shouldn't cause any problems. Oh, a big symptom of renal (kidney) failure is jaundice (yellow eyes). If you note this, it's time to discontinue the diph and see a doctor. Otherwise, it's probably just that you strained a muscle group or something.

FAIL. 12 gauge is the only way to go. Or maybe a large caliber handgun (40s&w minimum).

Hydroponichronic- Thank you for such a detailed post, it was really helpful. Maybe I'm just thinking back to the old days of totse, but its not often that someone actually has some actual scientific info to share, especially about benadryl which most people consider noobish.

Anyways, I will say that although I used to try and get a wild crazy trip off of taking 20 at a time like once every three months, I found it is much more effective to do it daily. What I noticed is that the very negative effects of the body load seem to disappear as my tolerance builds, but the cool stuff is still there. For example, I used to feel like my body was made of cement, barely be able to focus and have an all around bad experience. By taking moderate amounts on a daily basis, it seems that I have trained my body to get rid of the negative stuff and the positive effects become much more pronounced. Music appreciation, visual/spatial distortions, altered thought processes, and also sexual enhancement as wierd as that may sound.

If you like the experience, but hate the negative side effects you should try taking small to moderate doses daily for a few days...

I've always worried that the mental effects will become permanent with chronic use. Kidney or liver damage was another concern of mine, actually; I too have been using moderate to large amounts nightly for a long time. However, I haven't actually noticed any ill effects. I'm cutting back on principle anyway, though.

http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/art...?artid=1451752

Here's an article on dimenhydrinate. It talks about people who took high doses regularly. "50 mg dimenhydrinate contains 27.2 mg of diphenhydramine," according to Wikipedia. So multiply by .544 to get the equivalent amount of diphenhydramine. I'm not sure if the theophylline in it makes a significant difference, but it might.

edit: 300 - 450 mg is a typical dosage for theophylline, so it's unlikely that the effects described in the article are due to it.

Well, if that doesn't prove it, I don't know what would. If you can survive, what was it, like 3200mg daily of dimen, for a period exceeding a year and be fine physically (they would have mentioned kidney of liver damage) this stuff's harmless at your doses. Well,

QED

Or don't use every night.

I just took 14 of 'em.

Last time I took was a few days ago.

So maybe once or twice a week?
