ATTN: Meat eaters
I am an omnivore considering going vegetablaterian and i have a few things to ask you.
Taste aside, would you have a problem eating a certain type of meat/animal.
For example lets say you are your average omnivore westerner and you enjoy pork, bacon, ham, lamb, beef, chicken, venison- all of those popular meats.
So lets say i made a proposition and offered you some dog meat, or some cat meat or some canary meat, or quail, or pheasant, or kiwi, or peacock or monkey etc etc YOU get the picture.
Is there any animal you wont eat?
Im particularly interested in the respone to domesticated animals such as cats or dogs (no i dont expect to eat your own pet, lets say its farmed or wild).
Please articulate your reasons for the resposne i.e. thats grose, that doesnt taste nice, that.s unethical (which is the contradictory answer im after )
Clearly "that tastes grose" is an arbitrary argument if you have never tasted the meat.
Also would you be prepared to skin and butcher the animal called into question, and then eat it.
Finally, could you eat your pet?

Re: ATTN: Meat eaters
To create dogs, man took a social animal with an already high ability for empathic response (the wolf) and selectively bred it for tens of thousands of years to form bonds with humans and to feel protective toward humans.
Scientific observations have found that the natural behavior of dogs, when directly uninfluenced by humans, is very similar to the response of a 2-year-old child.
I would not eat one. The same concept does not hold true for a fish or a chicken.
I don't eat veal either, because I personally find it to be unnecessarily cruel.
Humans are made to be omnivores. Most vegans have to take supplements to keep themselves healthy- also, have you noticed most of the vegans you meet tend to be in their teens to thirties?
The body needs more nutrients. I have some formerly vegan female relatives that had to add meat back into their diets upon reaching middle-age and developing many related health complications.

Re: ATTN: Meat eaters
The reason people don't eat cats and dogs is they're intelligent creatures capable of work. That's why they were kept around, dogs for protection, cattle wrangling ect and cats took care of the pests that were potential threats to crops. Now a days they're used mainly for companions because of their human like qualities (affection, loyalty)
Another reason why they're not eaten is they don't yield much meat and what is yielded is very stringy and flavorless. Some people do eat dogs and cats and no not just Asians.
I've eaten all kinds of meat, deer, bear, rattle snake, squid, shark, elk and gator. I'd try pretty much anything.
I could most certainly eat my cat in a survival situation but I wouldn't just down her and slap her on the grill just for the shits and giggles of it. I'd have to be pretty fucking hungry. If there is an animal around in a survival situation I'm going to brutally murder it and eat it. Plain and simple.
I have no problems with veal.

Re: ATTN: Meat eaters
Like frank said, in a survival situation I would not be picky, but in day to day life I prefer to limit my meat intake altogether.
I think it is a simple case of blissful ignorance. You are fine with eating sheep, but if you had a pet sheep you cared for and loved you may be somewhat reluctant to eat sheep after that. It's just a matter of empathy; namely a lack of empathy towards your food.
If cows were domestic animals and dogs were the traditional livestock, I am sure that the attitude would be the same as it is now.

I've also considered swearing off pork, since I feel that they are just as smart and valuable to social uses as dogs.
There was one point where I tried out vegetarianism with my best friend, but even when I ate as much food as usual, I lost 7 pounds and felt fatigued every day when I went without meat for a week. I don't even eat that much meat in a week. So be aware, and good luck.
In a normal situation, I wouldn't eat any animal that I felt was capable of making a voluntary, non-instinctual sensory response to me. That is to say, I wouldn't eat an animal that would come if I called it, could make a friendly acknowledgment to my presence, etc. I also wouldn't eat something that would harm the population of a species, i.e. endangered species, perhaps species of fish that are currently being over-fished to near-endangered levels, etc.
But, in the case of some sort of situation that left me with the options of death or consuming something I'm very against, I'd chose the latter hands down. But I don't think I could ever eat a pet or a family member. I don't know how my mindset would be if it ever came down to it, but the way I think, I would never eat a loved one, but I'd sooner eat another human than my own dogs, since they are like family and they are valuable assets to finding other sources of food.

^ If you would honestly eat another human over your pet dog then I think you need to re evaluate your intelligence. Do you honestly put a dog over a feeling, thinking human?
I know you can say dogs think and feel, but they are not even close to the same level as a human, or even a monkey.

Now that I think of it, when I was typing my answer, I was thinking dead human flesh > living dog flesh. But if it came down to killing/dressing/cooking/eating a living being, then you're right. I'd go dog.

Ahh, fair enough then. Still, I have never been atached enough to an animal to consider eating a corpse. Maybe if I had a pet chimp...

Re: ATTN: Meat eaters
Try it? Hell yeah, I'd try anything... I've eaten some strange things. Kangaroo, Alligator, Bat, Tapir...
I'd skin it and butcher it, but I'd want to leave the actual cooking to someone who knows what they're doing. It'd be a waste otherwise. I'd eat cat and dog if it was cooked correctly. Hey, if nobody was killed in the process I'd try human.
No, I would not eat my pet.

I don't have a problem with people eating any kind of animal (assuming it's not super endangered or something), but I'll stick with the good old american pork and chicken. I don't like beef.

Re: ATTN: Meat eaters
i ate a feral cat once. was pretty good. me an a buddy were back packing, after we made camp for the day we set a few snares(since we had not brought much food with us, opting instead for drugs). when we went back to check em later that day we found this feral cat caught in one of them. so we killed it an ate it. now it might have been the fact that we had not eaten in almost two days, but that cat tasted pretty damn fine.
i think i could eat any animal, except for a human. that just seems weird. but to be honest, i do not know how i would respond if someone offered me a juicy Human-wich. thankfully i dont think i will ever be in that situation.

Re: ATTN: Meat eaters
It is easy to argue for the nutritional deficiencies of the vegetarian/vegan diet. Its even easier to argue for the nutritional deficiencies and especially extremities of the meat eating diet.
In my country (New Zealand) most people eat meat everyday, when it should be eaten 3 times a week in a small portion. The most fatal of all deceases in the western (OECD) countries is Cardiac decease (infact it has the Guinness world record). Fried/ Deep fried fatty foods high in cholesterol are largely responsible for this; most of which is meat.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out meat is a sometimes food; but frequently is treated as a regular food; i myself am also responsible for doing this.
Ive never been a person who cared much for nutrition or a balanced diet; i make a conscious effort to eat a "balanced diet" most of the time; not bothering with information i would call "expert information". Il leave that for the dietitians and doctors and scientists. As a person very interested in epistemology and knowledge as a whole i try to learn as much as i can; but for me this is low priority. Nutrition doesn't mean much to me; philosophically you could argue this is vicious to myself; but that goes against my personal philosophy.
I would rather be dead in a moment; than be dead my whole life and never experienced reality. So, that is my argument for the nutritional aspect (the neglectful of nutrition).
To me something like nutritional is very materialist, material is demonic (in its original context, not with all the connotations it conjures up to today's society).
To me it seems the most popular argument against eating a dog or a cat would be that those are somewhat different to other animals and more "human like".
Any biologist or person with biological knowledge can tell you that most animals exhibit the same "responses to stimuli" that most human's do. It is contradictory to speak of love and affection in the context of natural science; this is not a naturally scientific concept, it is a socially scientific concept, and arguably a spiritual concept (i want say spiritually scientific because that's a whole other topic and i don't want to get my hand bitten off).
I will take the statement that Dog's Psychology is somehow fundamentally different to other animals as pure opinionated ethnographic bias until empirical evidence proves otherwise; which to my knowledge has not been done. This to me looks look a self serving prophecy- a fact invented to justify your position. This is an arbutruary(sp) fallacy.
As i see it all animals differ from humans because of one vital asset- consciousness. That is all. Because other than that we are no different from other animals.
And indeed many human's who do not develop their consciousness are behaving like animals. With this knowledge we could put forward the proposition that it is ethical to kill and eat human's who are in laymen terms "lesser". This is not a position i subscribe to, but to those who can justify eating non-human animals may not consider humans who lack consciousness life as a matter of ethic's. If you can eat an unconscious animal outside the homo-sapien species you can eat an unconscious animal within the homo-sapien species.
Not to do so is ignorance/contradictory/hypocritical/disingenuous and cognitively dissonant.

Re: ATTN: Meat eaters
Personally I think a lot of people here are absolutely full of shit saying they won't eat an animal because it has "feelings". Every creature feels pain. I'm pretty convinced the real reasons most people won't avoid meat is
A. They've been conditioned since birth to eat meat. Their parents have fed it to them as children and they do not want to have to do the research and work to form a diet that is meat free, and most do not even believe it's possible, in other words: They're lazy and "like the taste and don't give a fuck"
B. Breaking apart from society is scary for people: Nobody wants to be the guy at work that is the vegetarian when it comes time for a luncheon on the company credit card. Nobody wants to be the guy at thanksgiving dinner who turns down the turkey. In fact, it would be almost rude to do so. Nobody wants to be the odd guy out, just like a lot of stoners who have eaten brownies don't want to suggest eating it vs. smoking it. Nobody wants to admit to the crowd doing things one way is stupid because the crowd won't follow and you will be the enemy. I found myself this alienated me from my smoking buddies when I chose to eat it.... and eventually quit altogether. I was alienated for choosing not to waste my money and get more out of something we all enjoy, and nobody seemed to care about their own health or money. Well, good for them.
Meat, ALL meat is high in cholesterol that the body doesn't need. Beyond that, it's nothing but toughened up pre-processed nutrients that you can get elsewhere which digest better. Is it a coincidence a lot of higher protein natural foods are also high in fiber? The fiber we so desperately lack in American diets?
An interesting fact is I used to think I was allergic to steak, ham and pork because for years (even up to age 12) I would vomit my brains out whenever I ate it. Only years later could I handle it. Today I avoid meat as much as possible, but it's really hard to buy all the meatless products I'd need to be a full vegetarian until I have a vehicle... all they sell everywhere is meat galore. If I HAVE to eat it, it's solid white albacore, other than that:
Skim milk, egg WHITES, oats, wheat bread or 9 grain bread, sometimes cheese, peanut butter, bagels, the high in protein kind, shredded wheat cereal, baked beans, pea soup, rice, broccolli. All of these foods will give you what your body needs as long as you learn to mix and vary them. I just bought this quinoa stuff that looks really high in protein and fiber but havent tried it out yet. ISOPURE protein powder is very low in cholesterol (like 1 or 2% RDV per serving, 50g per serving of protein, 1g? fat) and is 35 bucks if you shop around online (try amazon.com)
Also the soy chicken burgers taste exactly like chicken, but really I prefer more natural foods.
That with added things like cinnamon, cheese powder, other seasonings, fruits, nuts, tostitos with salsa dip baby?, makes for a pretty tasty anti-meat diet. You just need to put your mind to work. Meat I'll eat if I have no other choice, but Im slowly breaking the habit and finding no negative health results. Strength and body fat are related to how much one exercises, diet is just the building blocks so my main concern is really keeping up the discipline to kick my own ass.
I'd like someone to come in here and tell me I have a shitty diet. I'd especially love to hear the high opinion of someone who says "I dont eat dogs because LOOK IN THEIR EYES! THEYZ HUMIN!"
You don't eat dogs because you were raised to eat chickens. Some tribes bury their kids alive because they were raised to believe it's a sacrifice to the Gods. Societal conditioning is more than the way you live, it's your very mind itself.
I really don't care to get a heart attack at age 40, and I've already nearly died from eating stupid and ended up in the hospital. I won't make that mistake again, I won't even play around. Every day I'm here I think of all I would have missed if I left the world at 19 years old. In the future I see a society that will eventually wisen up, where sacred plants (mushrooms, marijuana) won't be illegal and people will be more interested in the effects of plants, fruits and veggies on the human body. To be honest, in all my 24 years of life, I have found oxygen is the greatest food, and nobody gets enough of it. Sure, meat tastes great. Meat doesn't give you the feeling you get when you fuck, run, or workout. That is the real food to me, LIFE itself. I could give a fuck about the food so much or how it tastes. "Just fuel for the engine" and if you ask me, a lot of people's tanks are way overfilled right now.
Oh by the way, look up Steve Holt and Bill Pearl. Veggie bodybuilders. You wanna be strong and meat free? Listen to these guys, not people who don't know diddly shit on the subject.
One of the posters above: "Nutrition doesn't mean much to me; philosophically you could argue this is vicious to myself; but that goes against my personal philosophy. Cool, is your personal philosophy called suicide? You need to stop your mental masturbation and grow up. Do you like taking gluey, gloopy nasty shits at random times of the day? Do you like having diarrhea 10 times a day? Do you like to breathe in little oxygen, feel weak and have people take advantage of you mentally because you're not strong and stable enough to stand up to them because you get no exercise and do boring shitty things all day? Good for you. Apparently you haven't had much exposure to the jungle that is society. I can see you smoking a clove with a french hat on drinking a 9 dollar cup of coffee on a friday night, thinking you're cool. "I don't care about nutrition, it goes against my PHILOSOPHY!" Your body doesn't give a fuck about your philosophy, that's the problem.
I have to be at work at a certain time or bills don't get paid. Because I need to be there at a certain time, I need to shape my entire lifestyle and eating times around that schedule, or I don't get to live. You can call me egotistical and materialistic all you want, but I refuse to live with lunatics like my parents and choose to be a hard working man that holds his own. I doubt you're there yet. I think until a man truly is poor and has little time to fuck around, and has to work his goddamn nuts off day in and day out, does he know what sacrifice is, sacrifice of the mind for better health. It's not until you've nearly died, or been in the poorest of health that you sacrifice your conditioning, and your mind, and do the right things for yourself. I see a common trend in humanity: Live with mommy, fuck girly, get marry. At no point it seems to people become interested in doing things absolutely differently and making the best out of themselves that they can, mind body and spirit. There's too many smokers on the fucking streets drinking coffee and making me want to vomit. What the fuck is wrong with people, there's like this make believe depression they carry on a daily basis that they just don't have the balls to snap out of. Making decisions like being veggie means breaking away from society, and I'm pretty sure that people's fear of being alone is fear because they don't know what it's like to be so totally different you cannot connect with a lot of people. It's too hard to wake up and workout as opposed to wake up, sleepily go to work, then fill your lungs with shit at your half dead friend's house wishing you would just DIE already. I lived that life, it gets old. For all the memories I have, I wish I had the money back, because man, it sure went to waste. Anyone wanting to defend that nowadays pretty much only makes me pissed off, because all they have to say is nonsense and garbage, I've proven to myself through experience.
Well, better to be alone and live wisely than jump the cliff with the crowd, I say.

|
So you're anti-establishment, we get it, you're an individual who doesn't follow the rules of society, good for you.l.
All I heard in your post was boo fucking hoo. All I read was how you feel you're a better person than everyone because you eat weed brownies(what are you 80) and avoid meat. You want to vomit when you see people having a cigarette or drinking coffee? Why the fuck should you care so much what people put into their bodies and don't give me that self righteous save the world crap either It's not your job to determine what people put in their bodies, whether it truly is better for them or not.
You're a fucking fascist and you won't be happy until you personally control the thoughts and actions of every person.

One minute you're talking about how society as a whole is stupid and inferior compared to you and your eating habbits and in the next minute you're so afraid of what these people might say/think. I don't get it.
I've turned down turkey at thanksgiving every year of my life, I just don't like the texture, it's not as terrifying as you make it out to be.Nobody oppresses vegetarians except for fucking vegetarians. They always boast and brag about how healthy and superior they are to everyone(see the above post of the guy who is willing to post his picture, as if his picture speaks for ALL vegetarians)They create a struggle for themselves to feel self righteous and important.
I don't care what the fuck you eat quite honestly, just don't try to act like you're better than everyone else(common vegetarian attitude)

Again, here we have a man creating a struggle for himself. Nobody is bashing vegetarians, no more so than vegetarians are bashing omnivores. We're simply discussing the matter, no guns are drawn, we're just discussing. If you think posting your picture proves a point or is somehow valid to our discussion then go for it but it's pretty sad that's the only thing you can contribute.

You can eat skunk and ground hogs. Skunks are tricky I hear because if you bust any glands you've tainted the meat, they're also filled with parasites.
Groundhogs apparently cook well.

Re: ATTN: Meat eaters
I will eat the hell out of any animal if it isn't obviously that animal sitting on my plate. I can't eat chicken on the bones or anything like that. Have someone else yank the chicken off the bone and slap it on a plate in front of me, I am totally fine. It's just the grossness of seeing all of the parts I wouldn't eat touching all of the parts I do eat... (I know, totally weird. I am a super picky eater)
I also couldn't eat any animal that I had seen alive before. Even if it were a pig/cow which are fucking delicious.
If I pet, hug or look at any animal, I can no longer eat that exact animal. No way.
Meat to me doesn't even register as an animal when I eat it, even though I obviously realize it is...

Re: ATTN: Meat eaters
I'll eat most any animal. Even my own cat or dog, though I would have to be VERY hungry for it to come to that.
As for all of the "out there" stuff, as long as it's cooked right and doesn't have parasites or other such stuff, I see no reason not to eat it.
There are a few insects I would not eat. No kinds of roaches, or flies. Too much association with filth and nastiness. And no spiders, just something inherently unpleasant about the though of biting into one of them.
Also, no human flesh, unless trapped under avalanche, and have to eat it to survive. Then its liver for dinner!

being a vegetarian with a mostly vegan diet is awesome. lunch today was a pb&j sandwich, a couple clementines, and a handful of walnuts. it's much more healthy than any processed meat shit.

|
That sums it up pretty well. Some animals are bred or hunted for food, but why would you eat an animal that has been bred, purchased, and cared for purely for companionship? Unless it was a survival situation, it would just be stupid.
If there was a dog or a horse or a cat that had been bred for food purposes, and i was hungry or curious at the time than yes i would eat it, but i wouldn't go out of my way and do so on an animal that was intended for use as a pet.

Please try not to take everything i say at face value and understand its hard to fully explain premise in this written context.
When i speak of my personal it is pretty much summed up in "live fast die young". Now that is just a summary, but its easy to see you have two main approaches to life in terms of lifetime in relation to goals.
A)" I must extend my lifetime as much as i can, no matter the cost"
B)"I must extend my experience as much as i can, no matter the cost; including cost to my lifetime"
Life experience> Life time.
That is all im saying.
Dont take it as meaning i have no interest in nutrition, just that its not high priority for me at this stage in life; that is the natural position of a 20 year old; more interested in life experience than life time.
If i wasnt interested in nutrition on some level i wouldn't have salad every dinner, i wouldnt try to avoid fast food; and proccesed food.
Naturally as a person interested in culinary culture (cooking) nutrition comes with this; but it is not high priority!.
Everyone must priorities their activities and experiences, we cannot do everything.
It would be a mistake to say Ive never lived in poor health, or come close to death.
When i was 7 i was diagnosed with haemulitic(sp) uremic syndrome, a disease which "comes and randomly and is cured randomly". I was officially declared dead twice, had a hemoglobin of 50, creatinin over 2.0; basically all of my body and bio-chemistry was fucked, i couldnt even pee because my kidneys lost function and had to be sent home to die on dyalasys (sp) with a 5-10% chance of survival.
But i am still here today, so before you go making such judgments based on impressions think and use your intellect.

What a fucking arbitrary answer. "We can't eat dogs because we bred them to be with us... and stuff...yeah"- fuck off.
Just because your culture socially constructs dog's to be more significant than others doesn't mean its truth. Do you think the dog wants to be your fucking batty boy? No-one wants to be a batty boy, and to argue against that (to remove that facet of life/living) is to contradict their "human-like" qualities that have been given to them. If they are so above other animals, and closer to humans then why are you domesticating them and taking them as your property? If they are so above other animals then wouldnt they be above the way we treat other animals i.e. eating them but also the way we treat them i.e. in captivity.
Everything and anything you experience in your enculturation has been done upside down, turned around, diagonal to and completly twisted in comparison to at least one other culture.
In other words western respect for dogs is simply a social construction derived from culture, we can see that Chinese, Koreans etc eat dogs, even though they have the same role in those countries as western culture. Are they wrong? No. Are you wrong? no.
Is everybody wrong? no.
Then who is right?
Only a philosophically sound premise can be an indicator or truth.
E.g. "meat-eating is ok because its natural and tastes good"
According to philosophy- wrong.
"Dogs are intended for domestication"
fucking wrong again, that is the purpose we have given to them, and our ownership of them is nothing but a concept.

I'd probably draw the line at other primates--after all, there is no right way to eat a rhesus.

I just hope, for your own sake, you don't wait until things take care of you to make good priorities.
When I was 19 I worked in a fast food booth (Dunkin Donuts) at a local supermarket. My priorities then were to smoke pot, get drunk, and hang out with my friends after work. At work I probably ate all the sandwiches, drank coffees and chais, and from what I remember didn't drink too much water or have a real diet. I never really felt that great about myself, well the high was all that meant anything to me. Is that living fast and dying young to you? One day I have really painful constipation, and go to the hospital. They tell me to get some sleep and maybe it will go away.
I wake up and as soon as I stand up my insides were in the worst pain you can imagine, so bad that to move one step it felt like stinging pain was about to cut off circulation in my body. I sat on the toilet all day trying to shit and drinking exlax and other laxatives, none of them working at all. By the end of that day I was in the hospital holding a family member's hand very tight, practically crying because it hurt so badly. I was short of breath, couldn't eat or shit, and knew I was very close to death. When I finally got in they did emergency surgery, yes, on my ass, (ha ha funny) and I had a drain put in me. A week after I had the drain pulled out, which is the loudest I've ever screamed in my life and seeing watery liquid and my own blood on the hospital bed wasn't the prettiest sight.
After this I was sort of swept into a totally meditative state of mind where I finally "got" why buddhists go their whole lives trying to correct their breathing, and pay close attention to their diet. I felt for the first time, clean and alive, because my oxygen level increased. Eventually, I started eating NORMAL things, like fruits and veggies. I used the set of weights my grandfather got me when I was 17 and grew really strong to the point I was attracting women I would have never thought would even look at me.
To put it simply, I wish, when I was your age, it didn't take me nearly losing my life to work on my own diet. I'm not telling you what to do, but you'd be surprised at how many things eating healthy and getting some exercise can do to a person. You want to live fast? See how fast you can bike, how fast you can jog. Getting fucked up isn't living fast. Maybe you can clarify what you mean by "living fast and dying young" as if a worthy experience somehow has to kill you and means diet isn't important.
I will say diet and exercise changed my life, and I will never risk it to hang out with my friends or eat high cholesterol processed shit, just because they smoke pot and dont eat it, just because the food tastes good. I won't even date a girl if I feel there's a chance she'll take away my fun time, that's how important it is to me. There's a point where a man has to be a man, make sacrifices and choices, and I truly feel that having nutrition plays one of the biggest roles in that decision.
My life experience has been enriched by this, I don't know how you could think it any other way. Do you think fucking up your body is the highest happiness one can experience? Having an extremely deep rhythm of breathing and good physical shape, in my mind, is happier than any kind of unhealthy "die fast" happiness I have ever experienced. I would have missed so many things in life had I kicked the bucket at 19. I don't know how you could have nearly died and aren't making every attempt to get the most out of health, seeing as you know for sure death is on it's way. Is your plan to half-live?
If you want to die fast, go kill yourself, otherwise you're honestly still talking out of your ass in my opinion. I'm not fooled when I see people smoking cigarettes or doing other dumb shit to kill their depression, because I used to smoke them too, and they also blindly believe it is doing what it's not, hey kind of like Christians. The truth is it's a stupid habit that people only start to do because others do it too. They fuck up their oxygen level to feel a different state of mind mainly because they have no idea how to do it without intoxicants. How long it takes for one to admit that to themselves is a personal choice. It's not like I live a perfect life, I experience many risky things, but I at least know my core is where it all starts. No body = no experience.
In short, Life length = more oppurtunities to have more different kinds of experiences.
Life has a delicate balance.

I have no moral objection to eating animals, unless they are endangered.
Whales are fine as long as it isn't the last short finned blue dicked semen whale.

Life length does not equal more opportunities. As you age, opportunities are taken away from you by nature. You can still read, write and learn at age ninety but you cannot do what an eighteen year old can do. Life extension and prolongation is a farce. You are pretty much, for all intents and purposes, dead by the time you're thirty. Oh and, look out everyone, cigarettes fuck up your "oxygen levels"! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
