fake night deposit box scam
i'm liking this scam alot.
now while the idiot in the link i provided did get caught, i believe that the idea is sound.
with some thought and some welding skills, i think it could be done very effectively.
if you construct a convincing box that would fit over the banks existing deposit box, people will not give it a second thought.
a way to increase customer confidence would be to install a small video screen with audio saying - "welcome to dick's bank" or whatever.
remember, what the eye's see and the ears hear, the mind believes.

just make damn sure and search the area well for cops/surveillance before you go pick up your payday.

Re: fake night deposit box scam
Funny, I live across the bay from this, and a few years back someone did this to a local bank on the days before christmas.
I never understood how people are dumb enough to place their deposits in a little bin. That's all these people do, they make a fake out of order sign and put another type of box in front of the regular night deposit box.
IF you could make something that would be dropped into the night deposit box and catch all the money after it is dropped and then is capable of being pulled back out, you'd be good to go I believe, but don't try it this way, obviously people are starting to catch on.
EDIT: The guy on my side of the bay, St. Pete, never got caught either.

Re: fake night deposit box scam
Seems like a whole lot of trouble when one could simply slide right up to such a person with a silenced handgun pointed at knee-cap and just politely ask for the bag. Shades, hat, high collar, shady spot, disposable clothes.. maybe a light burnt out right in front.. building an elaborate setup certainly looks fun to do, but professional criminals are usually a little pressed for time. Just my opinion, is all.

By robbing someone at gunpoint, you'll get one bag of money. Then the cops are going to get called and, even if they don't have a good description of you, you'll probably need to lay low for a while.
If done well, a fake night deposit box could potentially get you several bags of money. This is theoretical, of course. Maybe nobody will make a deposit that night or maybe someone will get suspicious and call the police. Doesn't matter. You're not putting yourself at risk.
I would recommend staying a safe, discreet distance away from such a box. Good enough to keep an eye on it but not close enough that you arouse suspicion if the cops happen to show up.
Also, the guy in the article appeared to have left his box sitting around all weekend. A few hours should be sufficient.
I dunno. There's other things to consider, like security cameras, but I think it's doable.

Re: fake night deposit box scam
yep, the least amount of risk for the most profit.
remember that movie back in the 70's- the daring doberman's?
thats another idea i had, train a dog to snatch a money bag and run.
you could train him to run into the storm drain system where you would meet him at the other end a few blocks away.
but then you would have to give him a cut.

Re: fake night deposit box scam
If I were a cop and got a tip about a fake night deposit box, I'd roll up, hide, and wait for the guy to come pick it up.
Caught red handed. Indeed a bad idea.

Re: fake night deposit box scam
Or get a convincing vehicle, clothing, and sign saying the box is out of order. Stand by it in a police / guard uniform and take the deposits yourself. Watch the real hustles way of doing it and work from there. 'tis a decent backbone for a scam.

And yet they found almost $35,000 in the box.
The main risk I see is that, while most people would just dump their money into the box without hesitation, you'll always get that one motherfucker who says "waitaminute...this doesn't look right..."
The video screen that OP mentioned would probably help.

Actually, the idea kinda reminds me of American Gods by Neil Gaiman. In that story, there was an "out of order" sign on the deposit box and the protagonist had to stand outside in a security guard uniform. When a police officer showed up, the protagonist simply handed him a business card. The number was to a payphone where his partner was waiting to say that he was the manager of such and such security company.
Of course, it helped that his partner was a god and one of the greatest con artists of all time...
Also you don't have to pay that fucking dog anything if you don't want to. If he threatens to go to the police, run him over with your car. Who's going to investigate roadkill?
