Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
5 days away, baby!
I'm SO stoked for this game. This one is going to hold me until The Crystal Bearers comes out, and I'll be unlocking weapon upgrades in RE: Darkside Chronicles while I wait.
Yeah, yeah, I know Spirit Tracks comes out on the 7th, but I'll probably be playing that one at work.
Anyone else going to pick this one up?

I didn't know a new one was coming out... After the last two, I'm not so anxious.

Homecoming wasn't bad,but The Room was one of the worst games i've ever played in my life. Seriously, who the fuck came up with an inventory system for a SILENT HILL GAME??!!

Re: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
That looks like it could be good. And as per usual for a Silent Hill game, great music; that song reminds me of SH3 which also had some decent tunage. I hope the game comes with a soundtrack CD, that's some good shit.
I like the winter motif, and the RE4 style camera that's close up and to the right. My only concern are the enemies; those weird over-grown baby creatures aren't exactly scary, and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of variety.
That's what they need to do; incorporate a wide variety of psychologically torturous creatures that actually create a sense of fear. Moar scary shit
If the atmosphere is as creepy and unnerving as SH2 and 3, only ramped up with better graphics and sound, we might have a winner anyway.
Didn't play Homecoming, but I didn't like the Room. Way too many flaws. Great concept, terrible execution.

SH4's soundtrack was fantastic. The game was great, too, but I dont think its Silent Hill material. Call Silent Hill 4: The Room something totally different, 'cause it's sure as hell not a Silent Hill game.
If theres a soundtrack for this one, I'm definitely getting it. I have SH1-4 on CD, and I love them dearly. :]

Really? Even without the Silent Hill name, I thought there were too many flaws that kept it from being great. The first person view was great, but I hate having to wait for it to load when opening doors, instead of a perfectly fluid, real-time door opening so the player can freely move around. I mean, the apartment was pretty small! I don't know why they couldn't have the whole thing loaded up, all those loading screens completely ruined the atmosphere of the entire game.
Then there was the level repetition, and many of those levels were often forgettable. And I hated the way it gave you weapons... to fight ghosts you can't kill. And they gave some of the ghosts guns... which you can't take. Because they're ghostly guns that do real damage. And the inventory system with the item box in your apartment was needlessly complex, and although the apartment being haunted is a good idea, most of it really wasn't that frightening. Mainly due to my first point of the annoying loading screens constantly interrupting flow.
Even if it was labelled something other than a Silent Hill game, to me it just didn't cut the mustard. There were a few nice details here and there, just the core game was heavily flawed. Like I said, great idea, executed poorly.
Don't get me started on the awful controls..

Re: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
You know what, looking back on it, I think I enjoyed the scenery, environment, and ambience of the whole game more than anything. The music, the graphics, the characters and levels...
Come to think of it, thinking deeper into the things I enjoyed and what I didnt, SH4 was great to me because of how it looked, not so much how it played. I'm a big fan of the setting that Silent Hill has been building over the years, and I think I saw that for the most part and ran with it.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Silent Hill 4 is a bad game, it's just not a very good one, and while one huge aspect of the game took me in and immersed me in that world that only Silent Hill can deliver. Strip away what makes the characters and setting Silent Hill and replace it with anything...its not such a great game in retrospect.

Re: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
^^^ I understand. I actually fired up the Room as inspiration last night. The ambience is definitely great, though the voice acting seemed even worse than previous games. Then the dogs came out, so I tried to hit them, then the bad controls screamed even louder at me to turn it off. So I did.
I'm of the opinion that someone should try remaking "The Room", only fixing the controls, the jerky gameplay and camera, and getting some decent voice actors in on the action as well. And all the other various bits I'm sure I mentioned. It's just such a great concept and it could've been as good as the last three games (I still haven't played SH1 ), but there's just too much wrong with it.
lol, here we are talking about the Room. What's the deal with Shattered Memories? I've heard some people say it's a remake of the first game? What's the deal?
edit: wiki says it's a reimagining of the first game, and that there's no combat (huh..), and apparently reviewers say it lacks the punch of the earlier games horror-wise. But, it's coming out on PS2???? Which means, I can play it?????????? Holy shit, I might just have me a christmas present this year!

Re: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Yeah, its a "re-imaging". Its a remake like Resident Evil (GC) was for Resident Evil (PS1), not so much like Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (GC) was for Metal Gear Solid (PS1).
You know, like how RE for GC had so much more awesome shit than RE for PS? Where as MGS:TS was pretty much a word-for-word, scene-for-scene remake of MGS (Still awesome, nonetheless)?
Get it? :]

Re: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Just watched the video review on IGN:
http://wii.ign.com/dor/objects/14325...ev_120409.html
Looks great. Love the flashlight controls and I've been clamoring for a good survival horror game that focuses on running away from the monsters rather than fighting them.
I just don't see your average person picking up a pipe and going to town on the kind of fucked up creatures you see in Silent Hill, not when you could just as easily run in the opposite direction.

That's funny, I'm the sort of person who would want to stop the threat so it can't continue to pursue me rather than turn around and run away, though I'm kinda weird like that. I blame some sort of obsessive-compulsive thingy I may or may not have that I'm not really sure about.
Anywho, I figure SM's lack of combat may be a little unnerving, which might actually help. I think I'll pick this game up, I hope it's cheap. I mean, the PS2 version.
By the by, why would they release it for the PS2? It's a dead system. Or is it because they're focusing it as a Wii release?

I actually think the lead platform was the PSP, haha.

Re: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Spent the whole day playing this and just beat it. Probably one of the best endings in any game ever. The way the game profiles you psychologically is brilliant.
Definitely the best Silent Hill since the second one.

Re: Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
My psychological profile is mostly accurate. It only got a couple concepts about me wrong, but other than that the game is totally awesome. However, I wouldn't beat it a second time. Regardless how short the game is.
Those fucking creeper nightmare things, I had to keep aligning my motion sensor bar with my body.
