In an apartment? That's the kind of thing you think about before parroting. I understand respecting your parents, but when you don't have the experience to make a rational suggestion yourself, you use some discretion. By the way, I love the way your father left the decimals out of the calibers. ;-).

Re: best handgun to get
Anything strong enough for self-defense would run the risk of over-penetration. A snub-nosed .38 Special would work, but people like to pretend it's a lot more powerful than it really is. Being a revolver, you could store it loaded without the metal fatigue risk in the springs of ever-loaded magazines. It's also very small so you could whip it out fast.

who needs a pistol when you can get a Assault rifle.
Just curious is the Walther p99 a good pistol? I heard the P22 was pretty crappy.

This chef recommends a cheep ass kel tec because I'm pritty sure you on a small budget. And load it with glaser rounds, in an attempt to reduce penetration into your neighbors house

You may also want to try the 36, since the 30 can be kind of hard to grip for some people.
But above all, 12 gauge pump. Load it with 00 buckshot, keep out of reach of children, etc. It's not terribly complicated.

Nope fuck the 00 buck. For home defense #8's will get the job done just as well and really peter out when penetrating drywall.

Sorry to argue, but #8 birdshot will only make the assailant severly angry.
Unfortunately I know this from personal experience (as a witness, not the assailant).
.38 spl lead tipped hollowpoints will do the trick. And they will make a nice sized hole in flesh. You can even make them by boring a small hole in the tip of wadcutters with a dremel tool. Partizan makes nice .38 spl lead tip hollowpoints. Not fancy, but effective. And a .38 spl snubbie (I recommend S&W's excellent Chief's Special) will do the job, despite what the guy who called me an idiot a while back proposed. I should know. One of those is my backup gun.

00 Buck is going to rip his torso to shreds at a distanc and split him apart at closer range. Metaphorically speaking of course. Bird sot is just going to really anger the guy and will not drop him first shot uness you are lucky.

I'm talking home defense ranges, not 20 or 30 yards out.

Birdshot might stop an intruder but it's really not all that great a penetrator. I was actually pretty surprised at how poorly it performed. The boxotruth is down right now, but you should read his review of penetration of various types of shots. You really can't get into the vitals after a couple yards out. Remember, Cheney shot that guy in the face and all he got was bruised in the long run.
I shot a madrone tree from about 5 yards away with #6 shot and it barely embedded in the trunk. A lot of the shot didn't even penetrate the tree. I wouldn't like that in my face, but only the pain and the shock would stop an attacker, not CNS trauma or organ failure.
Of course, point blank is probably another story.

Re: best handgun to get
Lethality is considered an absolute. Either someone is dead, or they are not. Therefor, something is either lethal, or not.
All rounds are potentially equally lethal, however, statistically, they are not.

That was my point. The average distance of a defensive shooting is around 10 feet. I don't care what size shot you are using, at 10 feet it going to put a big hole in something.
But any stray shot is not likely to have enough energy to do any damage after penetrating two layers of drywall.

Re: best handgun to get
Get a police trade in .40 S&W Glock 22. You'll save some dollars and still have adequate stopping power.
...and since you live in an apartment and don't wanna make a racket, pick up one of these:

Re: best handgun to get
Definitely a Smith&Wesson .50 caliber magnum. Just the breeze alone is enough to peel a few layers of skin off. You're living in an apartment, but any kind of gun going off in there is going to attract attention in any event, so you may has well make it good.

I would definately recommend an AK-47 or a M16-A2 assault rifle....that way you can destroy the whole apartment complex with one mag.
seriously though all you would realistically need is some balls and two fists against your punk neighboors.

Personally, I use one of those novelty rubber band shooters made out of wood and a clothespin.
