Default 1984 by george orwell

Anyone read it? I had to read part one for english class a few days ago and did but I have no idea what the answers to these questions are. Please help.

1. Describe Winston's job and explain why he really isn't sure if it's 1984.

2. How does the mentality of parsons son reflect the society as a whole.

3. Winson says of the proles "unill they became consious they will never rebel and untill they rebel they will never become consious" How is this paradox time?

4. How does the lottery work in 1984?

5. War is peace, freedom is slavery, ignorance is strength and there are slogans accurate of the party. why or why not?

help would be very much appreciated.

I listened to the Audio Book and it was a long time ago. So, I might not be able to help much.
Try this:
http://www.online-literature.com/orwell/1984/
http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/1984/characters.html
http://www.bookrags.com/notes/1984/CHR.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winston_Smith
His job involves revising newspaper articles and doctoring photographs — mostly to remove "unpersons," people who have fallen foul of the party.
Also, the Party controls the date/time and it has total control over the media hence the dates can be controlled by the big brother. It could be 1986 but big brother can call it 1984 and it will remain that year. This shows the extend of control over people.

The rest you can find in the links easily.

Comrade Smith revises news articles as DFG said. He makes corrections in articles. As in he adjusts last year's chocolate ration so everyone thinks there is actually more chocolate this year instead of less. He removes unpersons but I think another department actually doctors the photographs.

The boy is the embodiment of the ideal citizen. Here is a boy that is willing to rat his own parents out if need be. Zealous, dumb, and malleable.

It's a paradox because to rebel the people need to be conscious.

Only small prizes were issued to keep people buying in. The real "winners" weren't actual people.

Your third question needs to be rewritten. The sentence structure is all wrong and I can't begin to guess what you're trying to ask. I'll try to answer anyway.

These slogans basically show how easily manipulated people are. This government is relies on the stupidity and fear(war) to get away with whatever they please. So yeah, those slogans are completely true for the party. The dumber the people the stronger the party because there is no one to resist them. The more war the easier it is for the party to stay in control(makes it peaceful for the party!).

1.) He works in the ministry of information and constantly edits old papers to "change history". Due to the fact that the party dominates all forms of information, he can not be sure of anything, and questioning the year was Orwell's way of stressing that point.

2.) Parson's son is a brainwashed tool who really buys into Ingsoc propaganda and believes all they say. This is represinative of the barianwashing of the youth as the most effective way to culturaly dominate society.

3.) Winston is saying that unless there is a revolution the information will never become "liberated" and thus the proles won't gain intelligence. But the revolution won't happen because the proles first need to become aware, and the only way for that is information liberated by revolution.

4.) Idiots keep buying it expcting to win and every now and then someone wins (almost definitley a fictional persona created by the Ministry of Information).

5.) Igorance is Strength: Only be collective ignorance can the party mantain it's strenght (and thus the strength of the nation).

War is Peace: By maintaning a constant stalemate of a war the 3 powers gaurntee that no one nation will ever gain any distinct upper hand, as the constant fighting requires each nation to pour whatever resources thay have into war. This paradox simply means that no individual power really poses a threat to the other in the long-term, thus war is in fact, peace.

Freedom is Slavery: Only through total obdeince to the party can an indivisual overcome the greatest of all failures: death. Through the party the individual is no longer a slave to death, for he will live forever through the ideals of the party.

Yeah, but you should probably read the book, you'll learn a lot.

If you turn this in as you're work you'll definitley get an A.

Getting people on the internet to do their homework for you is no incentive to read anything.

Untrue, I think every wannabe rebellious teen has skimmed over the book, not really taking in the deeper meaning just to say they did. Then again, there wasn't really any deeper meaning.

1984 summarized: I was disappointed by the outcome of the soviet revolution. Listen to me drool my personal beliefs for 300 pages.

his job is to fabricate news stories, the govt. lies about everything so he doesn't believe the year they say it is

parsons son is angry aggressive, and hates thought-criminals, and he excited to see the hanging. thats how everyone else is ???

what?

nobody ever wins except for the small prizes, and the large prizes are always won by someone in the "next town over" i.e. the govt lies, nobody wins.

just read the whole afterword thing about the slogan.

i really like the book also.

well the answer to 1. is that he isn't sure becuase the government is always tampering with dates, times, and editing stuff to show the party in a positive light

The point of the book was pretty much: He who controls the distribution of information, controls the masses. Also, that propaganda will always win the mind of the masses. If the party controls the flow of information and language, then they control the very thought patterns of the people.

It was set with Stalinist Russia in the 1930's as the inspiriation. With "Big Brother" as Stalin, and "Emmanuel Goldstien" as Leon Trotsky. The switches in war propaganda was even based on how the Soviet press abruptly switched from having "the fascists" as the enemy, to "the imperialists" because of the MR pact, then they switched back again, then back again for the cold war. It was just an extreme version of what was pretty much happineng in the USSR under Stalin.
