Switching from vegan to non-vegan?
As some of you may know, I've been a vegan for almost two years now. It's a way of life that I wholeheartidly enjoy and embrace.
Well, I just found out that I'm pregnant and I know my baby will need as much protein and calcium that I can give him/her.
Just how sick will I get from dairy/meat? I've accidently slipped a few times and got incredibly sick from it, because my body is simply not used to it.
Does anyone have experience with the cross-over? If so, how long did it take for your body to adjust? I'm pretty concerned with this, because the pregnancy isn't treating me all too well and now this on top of it is going to make me feel very shitty.
Input?

Your best bet is to consult a doctor. Most people on Zoklet have no idea what they're talking about. :\

Re: Switching from vegan to non-vegan?
A friend of mine was in a similar situation. She was vegetarian, not vegan, but when she got pregnant she wanted to abandon that for the sake of the baby. Basically, she started off with chicken and fish for a while and after a few weeks was able to handle red meat.
Small portions at first and worked her way up from there. Maybe start with just a salad with some cut up chicken in it and see how it goes.

Re: Switching from vegan to non-vegan?
I know people who have gone from vegetarian back to normal after only a couple of months, and have got physically sick from it. I'd start off hella slow. Like, a small bite of chicken a day, slowly working up. And yeah, see a doctor. I think you're gonna end up feeling gross and nauseous for the first little while, no matter what.
And congrats on the bayybee .

Re: Switching from vegan to non-vegan?
Update:
I ate one egg this morning along with my usualy breakfast.
I added 1/4 real cheese and 3/4 soy cheese.
I'm doin pretty well, I'm kind've queesy but I'm pretty sure that doesn't have anything to do with the food. I think it's probaby the bebe.
I'll update more when I dig deeper into the world of carnivorous living.

Re: Switching from vegan to non-vegan?
I think if your getting sick from eating meat or dairy its mind over matter.
If i was a vegeterian i would not eat meat for the babies sake, although eggs/ diary are a different story imo (its quite possible to get the freerange/organic).
This is just because i dont believe that anything has a special sanctity simply because of my attachment for it.

Re: Switching from vegan to non-vegan?
I went from vegan to vegetarian with absolutely no problems whatsoever. Just introduce eggs into your diet slowly. I wouldn't worry about your nutrition, because as long as you are eating enough healthy foods you should be meeting nutrition requirements. Oh yeah, prenatal vitamins are around for a reason.

Re: Switching from vegan to non-vegan?
^Thanks, I'd just rather give the child a balanced diet, including protein, dairy, eggs, etc. It's just the choice I've come to the conclusion of.
Thanks for the links though, I appreciate it.
Oh, and of course I'll take prenatals...obviously.

Fair enough really, it is your choice in the end, would still be good to follow the advice in the links whatever diet you're on

lmao ...
All cows are killed for meat, and money is put towards that, also, ever heard of mastitis?
And 90% of the soy grown in the rainforest is used as animal feed ..

Re: Switching from vegan to non-vegan?
Eat organic, or game or fish. Animals fed on the wrong diet, pumped full of drugs and no exercise and lots of stress feed people who eat rubbish, need blood pressure pills and get fat and unhealthy and stressed. Google weston a price, some sound advice for you there.

Re: Switching from vegan to non-vegan?
One of the issues I have with Soya is that it has phyto-oestrogens. Normally during pregnancy, correct me if I am wrong you produce very little oestrogen. Thus any male child you may have could end up with a tiny phallus. Also sex hormones cause growth plates to fuse early. I would be very concerned about this and would speak to a doctor. Make sure you are taking a decent multivitamin which also has all the minerals like zinc and iron obviously and a multitude of others like selenium.

Re: Switching from vegan to non-vegan?
Remember your body was designed to eat meat, you've been forcing it to live unnaturally. It will return to normal after a while.
What drrocker said is key and absolutely vital, you MUST make sure you know where your meat is sourced.

Your body is designed to be able to handle meat, it isn't necessary for proper functioning.

Re: Switching from vegan to non-vegan?
It so is. In the 60's in the uk, a group of devout hindu indians started getting really ill. Turned out, the were eating food that hadnt been suplimened. In india, this hadnt been a problem as food processing standard were lower than in uk and they had been suplimented with insect bodies in their food.
