Acid base extractions

I understand how the so-called "Agent Lemon" DXM extraction process works. My question is, on how many other alkaloids would this, or a similar extraction, work? Is this how cocaine is processed from coca plants? How opium is purified?

Also, how useful is this extraction to the "kitchen chemist", other than making DXM ingestable without cough syrup junk?
