Does the "magic bag" trick still work?

SWIM has read a lot about the magic bag trick, where you line the whole inside of a bag with tin foil and it will keep the security tags on the clothes from having the alarms go off while walking out the store. But SWIM also heard that stores have upgraded their security so that trick doesn't work anymore. Anyone know if its still doable?

Well currently I am writing a book, my character is into shoplifting too. I have researched alot how actual criminals steal stuff out of stores.

Covering the items in a alumium foil bag (booster bag, magic bag) is a pretty old method. This method is not 100% safe and there is a big change the alarm WILL be triggerd.

In some stores you can buy alumium boxes. these small boxes are made of pure aluminium. Some times criminals steal these boxes out of stores because they are widely used. If a person hides the items in a aluminum box (hidden in a bag or something) the chances of the alarm being triggerd are even smaller.

The best "magic bag" method for criminals is to work with lead. They buy 1 - 3 mm thick plates of lead, they create some sort of box/bag and hide it in a bag. This is also the most difficult way. This method is called by some 100% secure and by others almost a 100% secure.

My character is going to experiment with the aluminum box method a bit, he doesen't know a lot about it.

Does anyone know if using layered mu-metal (like Ultraperm or Permalloy) will defeat Acousto-Mag alarms? How many layers needed is dependent on the sheet characteristics.

Mu-metals are reputedly great at absorbing frequencies <100 KHz

According to HowStuffWorks, AM systems use frequencies ~58 KHz
