Damages Season 3 (Major Spoilers Inherent In Discussion)
I'm only going to conceal spoilers in this first post, because it's pretty difficult to discuss the show without spoiling something major. Suffice it to say, if you want to watch the show (it's superb) and you don't want things spoiled for you, don't read this thread.
With that warning out of the way, I thought the premiere was great. It's a breath of fresh air to see a show with mature, tight writing back on the air, especially when the current season of 24 seems to be markedly stupider than usual and--worst of all--bland. Damages, on the other hand, hit the ground running. The writing, acting, and direction is as good as ever, all of the new cast additions (and there are a lot) blend into the mix beautifully, and the foreshadowed mystery of this season definitely tops the previous ones if I can cast my vote. It's going to be an intense season.
Season 3 Spoilers
I was honestly shocked, and perhaps rather annoyed, that they killed off Tom Shays. He hasn't been the most interesting character, but he's likable and has been something of a counterweight to Patty. I can accept a death as long as its a good one though, and the show has a great track record, so I'll let it play out. That said, I do question whether it was a good idea to reveal it so soon.
Revealing the fiance's death in the first episode of Season 1 worked because we hardly knew the character. With Tom...it kind of makes things a bit too morbid, a bit too early. It might have been better to reveal his death in the flashforwards after a few episodes. Or maybe not. We'll see.
