Default Does jam ever go bad?

Like if I left a sealed, brand new jar of strawberry jam in the cupboard, and a half-empty one, how long would it be before they were no good to eat?

Depends on a lot of things. But yes, I've seen jams, jellies, marmalades, etc all grow fuzzy mold that probably isn't good for human consumption. Never really took regimented notes about how long it took, though.

There is usually a date on there someplace. Depending on the preservatives used that stuff can last for years, as previously stated.

Usually they only have a "sell by" date. Once it passes that, it's pulled from store shelves, but in many, many cases it'd still be perfectly safe to eat.

A. The food items we produce are classified as non-perishable. Refrigeration is not necessary but recommended. Under normal conditions, unopened products should remain safe to eat indefinitely. However, over time the flavor and color of products will decline. Our products have a "best when purchased by" date on the back label
I guess the unopened one should be fine?

Yeah, I've had opened jars of jam in my fridge for close to a year before. They usually last a really long time, even if they are opened. I think that the trick is to keep contaminates like bread crumbs and peanut butter out of the jar.

Use a clean knife to spread it and you should be fine.

jams were meant to be a preserved food after all.

bacteria have little chance of thriving in such a high sugar environment. so yeast and mould will be your main concern. but i think if you eat it within a few months the acid will do enough of a good job to keep them at bay
